Movie armourer found guilty of manslaughter after giving Alec Baldwin loaded gun

An armourer for the film Rust has been found guilty of manslaughter after a woman died on set.

Rust, which was due to be a Western-style blockbuster in the 21st century, was pulled from production after emergency services were called to the set in 2021. Responders arrived to find cinematographer Halyna Hutchins wounded after being shot by acting star Alec Baldwin.

Hutchins was 42 when she was shot and despite their best efforts, the cinematographer was pronounced dead and an investigation into her death was launched. Baldwin, who has also starred in other Hollywood productions including 30 Rock and Beetlejuice, will also face trial for manslaughter later this year.

Baldwin was given the gun by armourer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, a licenced weapons handler – who had mixed up which bullets she had put into the firearm. After he shot Hutchins, people on the set in New Mexico co-operated with police as they tried to piece together what happened.

Gutierrez-Reed was eventually arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter for her role in Halyna’s death. She was put on trial and on Thursday (March 7), she was found guilty of Halyna’s death.

The jury listening to the evidence from the case took just three hours to deliberate until they came to a decision. As a result, Hannah, 26, could face up to 18 months in jail for the crime of loading the gun.

Upon hearing the news, Gutierrez-Reed remained neutral as she was led away to be put back into police custody. As she was being taken back to the cell, she reportedly told her sobbing mum: “It’ll be OK.”

In a statement following the verdict, Halyna’s parents admitted they were “satisfied” with the judge’s ruling. They also said: “We look forward to the justice system continuing to make sure that everyone else who is responsible for Halyna’s death is required to face the legal consequences for their actions.”

Following the incident, the cast and crew temporarily halted production as a mark of respect towards Hutchins. Since then, the crew have finished filming the movie as a tribute to Hutchins, with her husband now filling in as the executive producer of the film.
