Jan from Grease actress unrecognisable after taking 20-year break from Hollywood

Grease fans will remember Jan from the epic 70s musical film.

She was the nerdiest member of the Pink Ladies troupe, played by Jamie Donnelly. Known for her unmistakable smile, she originally played the part of Jan on Broadway which made her the only Grease cast member to play the role in theatres and on the silver screen.

Before she appeared in Grease, Donnelly was no stranger to starring alongside A-list icons. She landed a spot in The Rocky Horror Show with Tim Curry in the New York and Los Angeles productions of the cult classic.

It has been reported that Jamie played the roles of Magenta and the Usherette in the stage production. She has also worked alongside Meat Loaf and appeared in the musical version of Tarzan.

Following her success in Grease, Jamie decided to take a break from acting. Her extended absence spanned for almost two decades as she pursued a career as a theatrical coach, returning to her love for stage productions.

Eventually, Donnelly decided to dip her toe into the world of Hollywood once more and returned to acting in the late nineties. Her acting credits include Monk, Veep and Ray Donovan to name just a few of her TV projects.

On the silver screen, Jamie continued to brush shoulders with the greats – she appeared in Black Mass back in 2015 with Johnny Depp and Cyrus five years before that alongside Marisa Tomei.

Grease was released back in 1978 and has become one of the most popular films of all time. The musical romantic comedy stars John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John and is based on the stage musical of the same name.

The Pink Ladies were some of the film’s main characters

It follows students at Rydell High School, specifically Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson who begin a summer fling throughout the school year. Grease was released by Paramount Pictures, was nominated for an Academy Award and five Golden Globe awards.

In 2020, the musical film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.”
