Simon Cowell has been dealt a huge blow to his hopes of creating the world’s next big boyband.
Cowell, 64, is currently trying to form the group as part of a new Netflix show looking at the journey of becoming a pop star. As the mastermind behind The X Factor and Pop Idol, the music tycoon was set to embark on a new adventure in the show – titled The Midas Touch.
Auditions were held for the first time in Liverpool on Saturday (July 6), with the rest of the auditions taking place on Sunday (July 7). However, the show was left in an awkward position when just 40 people turned up to audition for the show.

Bosses at the show were expecting a huge turnout at Albert Dock, with rows of railings stretching across the complex, similar to the days of The X Factor. One person who had walked past the trickling queue said that the demand to take part was just not there.

“They started arriving slowly from about 9am on Saturday but the biggest number in the queue never amounted to more than about 40,” they said to the Sun. “By early afternoon, the number arriving had virtually dried up and it was the same story on the Sunday audition.”
The onlooker added: “The amount of railings they put up suggested they were expecting hundreds or thousands of people to arrive and pack out the queues but they had a fraction of those kinds of numbers.” It comes as another blow to the project after some audition dates had to be cancelled.

The multi-millionaire mogul said that the audition stage of the show would kick off in Newcastle on Thursday (July 4). However, these dates were eventually cancelled, due to the “travel schedule” made by organisers.
However, those looking to try their luck at fame in the band have options, as auditions are set to continue over the coming weeks. Two more audition days are set to be held in the Irish capital Dublin later this month, with three days being scheduled in London at the start of August.

Simon is looking to capitalise on the success of previous shows such as The X Factor, as he recently admitted that he would love to bring the show back. The long-running show was eventually cancelled in 2019 after nearly fifteen years on the air, after launching the careers of big names like Little Mix, One Direction and Leona Lewis, to name a few.
Cowell launched his search to find the group by launching a series of billboards across the country. Pointing at the viewer, Simon beamed as he covered his eyes with his iconic black aviator sunglasses, with the text reading: “Simon Needs You!”
