Cheryl says Liam Payne’s death is ‘breaking her heart’ as she ‘can’t protect’ son Bear

Cheryl Tweedy has spoken after the tragic passing of her former partner Liam Payne. The ex-One Direction singer tragically met his end in Buenos Aires, Argentina, falling from the third floor of his hotel after a holiday with his girlfriend, Kate Cassidy.

Liam, who soared to fame with the mega-band, shared a son, Bear, aged seven, with songstress Cheryl. They went separate ways in 2018 after two and a half years and having welcomed Bear into the world a year prior.

Cheryl has now released an emotional statement, highlighting the impact Liam’s death will have on their son.

She said: “As I try to navigate this earth shattering event, and work through my own grief at this indescribably painful time, I’d like to kindly remind everyone that we have lost a human being. Liam was not only a pop star and celebrity, he was a son, a brother, an uncle, a dear friend and a father to our 7 year old son. A son that now has to face the reality of never seeing his father again.”

The devastated singer added: “What is troubling my spirit the most is that one day Bear will have access to the abhorrent reports and media exploitation we have seen in the past two days. It is breaking my heart further that I cannot protect him from that in his future.

“I am begging you to consider what use some of these reports are serving, other than to cause further harm to everyone left behind picking up the pieces. Before you leave comments or make videos, ask yourself if you would like your own child or family to read them. Please give Liam the little dignity he has left in the wake of his death to rest in some peace at last. Thank you, Cheryl.”

It was reported that he tragically fell from the third floor of a hotel building, with emergency services rushing to the scene. A body was discovered in an internal patio of the hotel.

The hotel manager alerted the police to the incident. It’s believed that Liam fell from around 13 or 14 metres and suffered “very serious injuries incompatible with life.”

The head of reception at Hotel Casa Sur made two desperate 911 calls, pleading for “someone to come” after revealing that a guest was “off his head on drugs and is destroying everything in his room”.

The local ambulance manager released a statement to TN, saying: “At 17.04 through the 911 integrated public safety system, we were alerted of a person who was in an internal courtyard of the management of a south house hotel. At 17.11 a SAME team arrived and verified the death of this man and later we found out that he was a singer in a musical group. Unfortunately, he had injuries that were incompatible with life, as a result of his fall, so we had to confirm his death, there was no possibility of resuscitation.”

Liam first met Cheryl when he auditioned for The X Factor at age 14. They confirmed their relationship in February 2016.

Cheryl kept fans in suspense for months before revealing her pregnancy during a L’Oreal photoshoot where she posed in a tight black dress, cradling her bump. The former couple announced the arrival of their baby Bear on Mother’s Day in 2017, sharing identical Instagram posts of Liam holding their newborn.

However, their relationship began to deteriorate after Bear’s birth.

In a heartfelt podcast confession back in June 2022, Liam said that Bear is “a lovely, lovely boy” and lauded Cheryl as “the best mum in the world.”

However, he also admitted that Bear’s arrival “ruined” his relationship with Cheryl “for all the right reasons”.
