Coleen Rooney appears to have taken a cutting swipe at rival Rebekah Vardy in new legal documents filed by her lawyers in the ongoing so-called Wagatha Christie libel trial.
Vardy’s claim focuses on the widespread damage and public humiliation Rooney’s Instagram post caused, which accused Jamie Vardy’s wife’s Instagram account of leaking information to the press.
Using Google Trends data to back up her argument, Rooney says that while there was a spike in online searches following her post, which did exceed the number of searches for Brexit – this was only short-lived.
They add that using “searches for Brexit” is a flawed comparison as “around the same time as the Post, interest in the breakfast cereal Corn Flakes exceeded that of Brexit”.
Rooney’s legal documents state: “The Google Trends data for 9 October 2019 shows a brief spike, for a couple of hours, of the Claimant’s name exceeding interest in Brexit.

“It is not a helpful comparator, nor a useful means by which to assess serious harm.
“The Claimant has previously exceeded interest in Brexit on Google Trends on several occasions. The process of ‘Brexit’ (the United Kingdom withdrawing from the European Union) had been ongoing since 2016 and there had been few developments at the time of the Post.”
The document adds: “Indeed, for a time on Google Trends, around the same time as the Post, interest in the breakfast cereal Corn Flakes exceeded that in Brexit.”
Speaking in court in London on Thursday morning, Hugh Tomlinson QC, acting for Vardy said that while for many in the country the “Wagatha Christie” narrative is entertaining, Mrs Vardy isn’t entertained at all.
“It isn’t entertaining for Mrs Vardy,” Tomlinson said.
“It has and continues to be upsetting. In fact she did nothing wrong.
“Whatever leaks there were did not come from her.”
Court documents filed by the Dancing On Ice hopeful claim that Vardy suffered so much stress and anxiety and stress after the post due to large scale humiliation, she feared losing her unborn baby.

The court document states: “The Claimant has suffered extreme distress, hurt, anxiety and embarrassment as a result of the publication of the Post and the events which followed.
“The abuse that followed the Post made the Claimant feel suicidal.
“She suffered from severe panic attacks and anxiety which manifested in being scared to leave her house.”
It goes on to claim that even inside her house, Vardy was left unable to sleep and “suffered from severe insomnia” and was admitted to hospital three times after anxiety attacks.
Vardy goes on to detail a string of vile messages she received online from trolls – many of which calling for harm against both herself and her unborn child.
