Kate Garraway 'fears for Derek's survival' after he said his first word – 'pain'

Kate Garraway has told how she fears for her husband Derek Draper’s survival despite him saying his first word since being admitted to hospital with Covid.

The Good Morning Britain presenter yesterday revealed Derek mouthed the word “pain” as doctors worked on his body to keep his muscles moving.

But Kate, 53, has now explained she is filled with a mix of emotions over his breakthrough.

Kate told The Sun: “The emotionally challenging thing is that we’re waiting now to see what happens next; somehow it’s even more agonising now there’s been this breakthrough.

“We have greater hope now, but also greater fear of him slipping back.”

Kate also discussed how the unpredictability of the deadly virus makes her most worried.

She said “there’s no precedent” to this virus, adding that “even now”, she thinks “no one fully understands it and its long-term effects”.

Kate said the signs are positive for Derek because he has had his tracheotomy tube removed, allowing him to breath on his own.

Derek was first admitted to hospital at the end of March, and was placed into a medically induced coma to try and help his body heal.

But Kate later revealed that the virus wreaked havoc on his organs, attacking his lungs, heart, kidneys, liver and pancreas.

But she thinks “he still has a long way to go” in his recovery.

Derek has type-1 diabetes as a result of the virus and remains heavily medicated as he is still weak, Kate revealed.

Sobbing Kate had to watch her husband’s body be manipulated by medical staff, after he spoke his first word.

He also remains in a form of coma called a PDOC (Prolonged Disorder of Consciousness).

Her husband has dropped eight stone in weight and now has Type 1 diabetes, which he didn’t suffer from before.

Their children, Darcey, 14, and Billy, 11, have not been able to see their father since he first went into hospital due to hospital guidelines.

Derek’s parents have also been unable to see him, and their home county of Lancashire is now in Tier 3, preventing them from being able to travel.
