Robbie Williams says he was victim of an assassination plot as he rose to fame

Singer Robbie Williams nearly had one hit too many – when a contract was taken out to have him bumped off.

The Angels singer said he was the victim of an assassination plot after rocketing to stardom.

Robbie, 46, said people wanted to beat him up’ when he was growing up in Stoke-on-Trent in the 80s.

The situation got so serious that shortly after he made it big as a member of boy band Take That he discovered there was a hitman after him.

He told Fearne Cotton’s Happy Place podcast: “When I was 17 people wanted to beat me up. Everywhere that I went.

“There was a contract out on me to kill me at one point which I’ve never talked about.’

The dad-of-four said he was so sensitive while growing up he would often burst into tears at the slightest provocation – which was “embarrassing”

“I think I was born kind of raw,” he said.

“It felt like I was the most sensitive person in the world, that’s what it felt like.

“At the time it was embarrassing. I was overwhelmed before I became famous.

“If that person looked at me in a bad way or this person shouted at me or me not fitting into certain social circles, like a geek or feeling uncool.Things would make me cry.

“I’d play football with some older lads and one of them would shout at me and I’d have to leave the pitch and I’d burst into tears walking home by myself in this world.”

The tormented teen said he would ask himself: “Why am I so soft? Why I am crying? Why is this affecting me so much?”

His sensitivity made it all the more difficult to adjust to life as a pop star.

“Within a matter of five, six, seven months I’d been catapulted to Mars on a space ship and I was expected to understand how to man that spaceship and make it land properly and take care of myself and be safe,” he said.

“I wanted to return to normality while still being able to fulfil my destiny and I didn’t know that fighting against it was futile.”
