BBC presenter dies from short illness weeks after leaving show

Former BBC Radio Solent presenter Richard Cartridge has died at the age of 72 following a short illness, Radio Solent has confirmed.

The south coast radio station announced the news on social media.

The Radio Solent account tweeted: “We are deeply sad to announce that our dear friend Richard Cartridge has passed away following a short illness.

“Richard entertained the south on-air for over 46 years. Thank you Rich.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. He will be deeply missed.”

The 72-year-old started working at BBC Radio Solent in the 1970s and retired in June of this year.

He left the station briefly after he was included in a cull of presenters, but brought back after public demand which was supported by a number of local councillors.

Richard had suffered from mental health struggles, learning that he had bipolar disorder around 1997.

But in 2013 he revealed he had won his mental health battle after going through therapy and taking medication.

Tributes have already started pouring in for the popular radio presenter.

Richard’s BBC colleague Jason Horton tweeted: “Richard Cartridge was the most generous and warm hearted man in radio. A huge loss for family and his BBC Radio Solent audience. That voice will live on forever.”

Neil Sackley wrote: “So sad to hear my old friend and colleague Richard Cartridge has passed away.

“His laughter was always genuine and we often tried to make each other laugh at the most inappropriate times.

“Proper gentleman and a real honour to work with.”
