BBC The One Show's Alex Jones breaks down on live TV over tear-jerking tribute

BBC The One Show presenter Alex Jones was forced to wipe away her tears in the closing moments of the show this evening, following an emotional tribute to the NHS.

Christopher Eccleston joined Alex and Gethin Jones on the show, having dedicated a poem to the brave workers of the NHS who have battled coronavirus on the nation’s behalf.

The 56-year-old actor stood before a rainbow-panelled wall and launched into a recitation of the poem, accompanied by clips of NHS workers in action.

Branding the workers as “soldiers in blue,” he said: “We sent them to war with one simple task, to show us the way to lead and inspire us.”

Later, he referred to the weekly clap for the NHS, saying: “We clapped on our streets hearts bursting in pride.”

Paying tribute to the care workers and members of the NHS who have lost their life to coronavirus, he added: “Some never came back – the ultimate price.”

Finishing the poem, Christopher said: “So many of us owe so much to so few, the brave and the bold our heroes in blue.

“Let’s line the streets and remember our debt. We love you our heroes lest we forget.”

When the camera zoomed out, it was clear Alex had shed a tear or two, as her voice started to break.

She said: “Thank you Chris. Very, very touching indeed, wasn’t it?”

Wiping away her tears, Alex tried to laugh it off, saying: “I bet I’m not the only one.”

Over on Twitter, BBC viewers were similarly moved to tears by the emotional poem, as they praised the NHS for their graft and bravery throughout the pandemic.

One said: “Very powerful reading of the NHS poem by Christopher Eccleston.”

“Aww @MissAlexjones I was in bits too over Christopher’s beautiful poem,” added a third.

The One Show airs on weekdays at 7pm on BBC One.
