Big Night In fans thrilled as Peter Kay makes TV comeback with new Amarillo clip

Comedian Peter Kay made his first television appearance in two years this evening.

The Phoenix Nights star, 48, appeared on BBC One’s Big Night In to introduce a new music video for his version of (Is This The Way To) Amarillo, which has been recreated by members of the public.

The actor, who was last seen on screens in 2018, told viewers that he “never imagined” the song would go down so well when it was first made 15 years ago with Tony Christie, adding that it is the “perfect time” to recreate it due to the current coronavirus pandemic.

Before introducing the 2020 music video for Amarillo, Peter, who was sitting in his back garden in sunny Bolton, said: “I never imagined that it would go down so well and make everybody happy, and I thought what a perfect time to recreate it again, so I’ve asked a lot of you to film yourself and send it in.”

Peter ended his message saying “take care and enjoy yourselves, lots of love to you all”.

Footage from the 2005 video were incorporated into the new version

The brand new video featured families at home, shop workers, firemen and women and health care workers.

In the clips within the main footage, which included people dancing to the music, is interspersed with clips of the comedian from the original 2005 music video.

Fans rushed to their keyboards to offer their verdict on the new Amarillo music video.

One fan penned: “So lovely to see Peter Kay back on tv tonight. Absolutely loved the new video of Amarillo with key workers, NHS staff etc.”

Another Big Night In viewer added: “New version of Amarillo with all the NHS staff and key workers in the background was a genius idea.”

A third said: “Brilliant to see the new Amarillo video and to see load of videos from across the UK.”

A fourth posted: “That Peter Kay Amarillo video was brilliant. Never fails to make us laugh and have fun.”

Over the weekend, The comedian called for members of the public to join him in remaking the video for the charity night, 15 years after Bill Roache, Michael Parkinson and Orville the Duck featured in his first version.

On Wednesday, Peter thanked key worker heroes for getting involved in the recreation of his Amarillo music video.

Taking to Twitter, Peter penned: “I wanted to say a huge heartfelt thanks to everybody who’s took the time to film themselves marching to Amarillo.

“We’ve literally received thousands. Lots of very emotional clips from nurses & care workers & key workers & shoe repairers. Thank you all xxx”

The Big Night In raised a whooping £27,398,675 which will help raise money for those on the frontline fighting coronavirus.

The grand total will be doubled by the Government.
