Coronation Street's Katie McGlynn lands first role since Sinead Tinker exit

Actress Katie McGlynn left Coronation Street fans in floods of tears last year as her character Sinead Tinker lost her battle with cervical cancer.

The soap star, 26, waved goodbye to her Corrie character in October and has landed her first role since quitting the ITV soap.

The blonde bombshell has confirmed she will play a single mum in a new drama written by BAFTA award-winning Kay Mellor.

Katie was personally picked by Kay, who is the screenwriter behind Fat Friends and Playing The Field, to star in her new offering for BBC show The Syndicate.

Speaking to OK! Magazine, the former Corrie star said: “I’ve always wanted to work with her. I was so nervous because I’d only played Sinead for seven years, but Kay was lovely and put me at ease.”

“The character is completely different to Sinead, which I love.

“She’s a single mum and she hasn’t got a lot of money.

“Lockdown happened two days before we were supposed to do the read-through so I haven’t met the team yet.

“They’re hoping to get things going again in August.”

Kay’s work as a director and screenwriter has led to her being appointed an OBE in 2009.

The TV star has also become a Fellow of the Royal Television Society in 2016.

Katie portrayed Sinead Tinker in Coronation Street for six years.

Viewers were left overwhelmed with emotion as Sinead was diagnosed with cancer and later died in heartbreaking scenes.

The tragic storyline has continued with Sinead’s husband Daniel Osborne (Rob Mallard) struggling to take care of their young son Bertie.

The Syndicate tells the story of members of a betting syndicate winning the lottery and is set to return for a fourth series after a five-year break.

The first three series followed a different syndicate groups from across the country.

Speaking about the new series, Kay said: “I’m thrilled to be working with the BBC again.

“As ever, it’s a brand-new Syndicate and has a fresh and unique transatlantic story.

“I couldn’t resist setting this series in a dog kennels either.

“I have a Shih-tzu myself and love animals – they say you should never work with kids or animals but I’m a sucker for a challenge and can’t wait to get started.”

Coronation Street continues on ITV tonight at 7.30pm
