Emmerdale Sugdens, Tates and Dingles – soap to explore family in special episode

Emmerdale is set to bring fans a set of exciting episodes that will provide a real blast from the past, as they look at different generations of some of the most iconic soap families ever.

Emmerdale Family Trees will include four 30-minute episodes, narrated by Gaynor Faye, who played Megan Macey in the ITV soap.

The show will look through the generations of three families that have provided plenty of drama over the years – the Sugdens, the Tates and the Dingles.

The episodes will be a mixture of both archive footage and talking head style segments from current and past cast members.

The Sugdens

The Sugdens’ episode will look at the farming family which has been central to Emmerdale since the start back in 1972, with matriarch Annie Sugden leading them.

Over the five decades of the soap, the Sugdens have endured heartbreak, feuds and sibling rivalry aplenty.

Viewers will hear from actress Alyson Sprio, who played Jack Sugden’s wife Sarah, who was involved in major storylines, including her barn fire death.

Actor Frazer Hines, who played Joe Sugden, will also look back at his time playing Annie’s son.

He will share his stories about becoming part of soap’s most famous farming family.

The Tates

The Tates burst onto the scene in the late 1980s, bringing with them glamour, money and power.

Frank arrived with his wife Kim, who is still in the soap today, and his children Chris and Zoe.

The powerful farming family became wrapped up in some of the soap’s most memorable storylines, from the plane crash that paralysed Chris, to a paternity battle over Kim’s son Jamie.

Jamie is now getting stuck into some big storylines of his own, and actor Alexander Lincoln will tell viewers what it’s like to be playing the son of the village villain.

Meanwhile, Kim actress Claire King will talk about why she loves being a part of the Tate dynasty, bringing plenty of glamour to the little Yorkshire village.

The Dingles first joined the soap in the 1990s but have become one of the nation’s most loved television families.

The older generation really made a stamp on the soap, with Zak Dingle leading the pack and still being around nowadays.

The first look at the family will give viewers a tour of the Dingles’ lives, loves, scams and antics of Zak, his three wives and seven children.

Sam Dingle star James Hooton will speak of how the entire family got behind one of their best scams – the medieval theme park.

Meanwhile, Lisa Riley, who plays Mandy, will share stories of the “Dingle Code” and why it doesn’t always keep the family in check.

The Dingles will get two episodes delving into their family, with the second looking at the younger generation, made up of a mixture of loveable rogues, heartbreakers and surprise siblings.

Viewers will sit through Aaron’s destructive streak and Liv’s battles with alcohol as they watch how the familial relationships brought new storylines to the long-running series.

Danny Miller, who plays Aaron, will speak of how the Dingle family name can be both a blessing and a curse.

And Jurell Carter, who plays Cain’s secret son Nate Robinson, will relive his character’s explosive affair with Moira, Cain’s wife.

ITV will also be bringing two special series about Coronation Street, to keep fans entertained.

Katie Rawcliffe, ITV’s Head of Entertainment Commissioning said: “Not only will new episodes of the soaps continue in the schedules, we now have these new specials to join them and entertain viewers.

“Both soaps have a rich history and we’ve delved into the archives with these new programmes to celebrate that.”

The series will air alongside regular episodes this summer on ITV
