James Whale battling cancer of the brain, lungs, spine and kidneys

TalkRadio host James Whale has spoken for the first time since being diagnosed with cancer of the brain, kidney and lungs.

The veteran broadcaster, 69, was diagnosed just two years after his wife, Melinda, died of lung cancer.

He recalled considering euthanasia shortly after his diagnosis in order to “go and get it over with.”

“I came home, had a little think about things. I decided I’m just booking myself a trip to Dignitas. You might as well just go and get it over with,

“I’d looked into it quite some time ago because Melinda died two years ago and it’s been something in the back of my mind,” he said

Despite his heartbreaking diagnosis, James has vowed to fight cancer in order to return to his radio show.

Speaking to The Sun, James said: “This little b*****d has spread.

“It’s in my remaining kidney. I’ve got a couple of small lesions in my lungs. I’ve got it in my spine.

“I’ve got it in my brain.”

James, who starred in the 2016 series of Celebrity Big Brother, recalled feeling unwell for close to a year before he noticed he had been forgetting names while presenting his radio show.

Shortly after visiting medical professionals, blood tests revealed that he had low sodium levels, which later led to him being referred to a haematologist.

Recalling the shattering diagnosis, he continued: “The woman looked worried and she said ‘I’m so sorry. I’ve got really, really bad news for you. I’m afraid 20 years ago you had kidney cancer. Well, it looks like it’s probably come back. You’ve got a tumour on your kidney.'”

He added: “And I thought, ‘OK, well, 20 years later I’ll have to do all over again.’ And then she said, ‘I’m sorry. Sadly it’s spread. You’ve got small lesions in your brain and your lung, in your spine, in your pituitary gland.'”

James shot to fame in the 1980s after hosting the popular Radio Aire show, the James Whale Radio Show based in Leeds, West Yorkshire.
