Love Island Connor Durman apologises after admitting to saying 'racist remarks'

Connor Durman has finally broken his silence on the Black Lives Matter movement and confessed to sending “racist” messages to someone “close” to him.

Fans have been tweeting their keenness for the 25-year-old Love Island star to address the movement after vile messages he allegedly sent to his ex-girlfriend were published online by The Sun earlier this year.

In the messages, Connor was accused of sending “racist” messages to an ex-girlfriend who he was in an argument with after she reportedly slept with someone else.

According to The Sun, who have claimed to have seen the messages, in the texts Connor brands sleeping with Black men as “rank” and labels his ex, Stevie Leigh, a “s**g”.

Following the claims, Connor has now taken to his official Instagram account to speak about the BLM movement to his 624,000 followers.

In his lengthy statement, Sophie Piper’s boyfriend admitted to sending “racist” remarks to an ex but did not confirm if it was to Stevie.

Sharing a block of black text on a white background, the coffee beans salesman wrote: “During my time in lockdown and seeing the BLM movement, it has given me time to reflect on my past and comments made during a heated conversation between myself and my ex girlfriend.”

Connor continued by adding that the conversation took place before he was on Love Island in 2019.

He went on: “Firstly, I would like to say I’m extremely sorry for my inappropriate and racist remarks written in the message.

“I completely failed to think about my words and ended up saying something hurtful and insensitive, when I was in an angry and emotional state of mind, talking privately with someone close to me.”

Connor continued: “The comments made were not a true reflection of the Connor Durman you all know today.

“However I understand now, these is no excuse for reinforcing racist comments.

“I will think very hard about my assumptions and phrasing from here on out and hope to have an opportunity to show what I have learnt, listened to and importantly understood regarding the BLM movement.

“The BLM movement has given all of us, especially me a huge insight into racism, although I’ve made regretting comments in the past, want to make it clear to the people hurt from my comments, including close friends and family, I am not a racist and I do not condemn any racist behaviour physically or verbally.”

The reality TV star went on to say that he still had “a lot more to learn” about the biggest ever Civil Rights movement in the world.

Connor added: “Being honest with my self, I still have a lot to learn about the BLM movement, culture and history, but I am very grateful that the BLM movement has happened, the movement has my full support and it’s helped educate me personally along with millions globally, which I believe is one of the many changes the BLM movement are protesting for.”

He finished the post by saying: “Finally, I would like to add because of the BLM movement, I plan to use my influence and social platforms positively, expressing in line with peaceful protests that is is time for a permanent change.”
