Good Morning Britain presenter Piers Morgan has hit back at an online troll who accused him of celebrating the rising coronavirus death toll.
The outspoken presenter, 55, took to social media this afternoon to discuss the latest Covid-19 death toll issued by the government and informed his seven million followers that Britain “is the second worst in the world for reported excess deaths”.
Piers also went on to reveal that three of his friends have lost parents during the current pandemic.
Discussing the latest coronavirus figures, Piers tweeted: “Breaking: UK #coronavirus official death toll rises by 545 in the past 24 hours to 35,341.
“Real number of COVID-19 related deaths now believed to be 62k. Govt no longer shows global deaths comparison chart. UK is currently 2nd worst in the world for reported excess deaths.”

In response to the GMB host’s tweet, one fan pointed out: “545…. down from 627 last Tuesday. Moving in the right direction. Instead you’d rather celebrate the total number of deaths. Disgusting.”
A frustrated Piers replied: “I don’t ‘celebrate’ the UK’s death toll. I’m horrified by it.
“Each fatality is someone’s grandparent, parent, sibling or child.
“I have 3 friends who’ve lost parents to Covid-19 and one whose husband is fighting for his life. So respectfully, f**k off.”

Piers experienced coronavirus symptoms recently and spent a week at home recovering.
The Life Stories presenter tested negative for the illness, but caused controversy after revealing that he had been given a test so quickly.
One now-deleted tweet to the TV star read: “Essential worker???? My daughter is a nurse – she’s an essential worker.”
Piers replied: “Your daughter is an infinitely more essential worker than me.

“I was drawing no equivalence, just explaining the government’s designated all journalists and broadcasters covering the coronavirus crisis as essential workers too, which is why we can get a test if we show symptoms.”
Now back at work, Piers has been opening up about his family’s experiences in lockdown and how he hasn’t seen his sons in over ten weeks, despite the fact that they live nearby.
Last week, the dad-of-four joked that he had found a way to meet up with his children in reference to the government’s new guidelines allowing cleaners to enter other people’s homes.
He tweeted: “I’ve worked out how to see my sons again – I’m going to employ them as my cleaners.”
However, his son Spencer wasn’t having any of Piers’ suggestion, replying to the tweet: “Good luck with that.”
Speaking about the idea on Good Morning Britain, he said: “I’m going to employ them as cleaners, and bring them round to my house.
“One of my sons, cleanliness is his thing. He’s slightly OCD about it.
“If you allow a cleaner, why can’t I say to my youngest son, ‘Come around and clean.'”
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV at 6am
