Sam Smith hits back at critics who slammed their crying lockdown selfie

Sam Smith wanted to get their version of events across after they were slammed by the general public for a crying snap, taken outside of their mansion that went viral.

The 27-year-old singing sensation shared a snap with their 15million followers, that didn’t receive the warm reception they’d hoped for.

In fact, it had quite the opposite effect, with TV legend Ricky Gervais lashing out at stars who had similarly seemed to complain about the quarantine process.

Speaking to The Sun, the funnyman said: “After this is over I never want to hear people moaning about the welfare state again, I never want to hear people moaning about nurses again. Or porters.

“These people are doing 14-hour shifts and not complaining. Wearing masks, and being left with sores, after risking their own health and their families’ health selflessly.

“But then I see someone complaining about being in a mansion with a swimming pool. And, you know, honestly, I just don’t want to hear it.”

Wanting to address the issue that has been lingering, Sam spoke to an understanding Amanda Holden and Jamie Theakston on the Heart FM Breakfast Show.

Smith said: “It was six weeks ago I posted a picture and everyone else was posting pictures.

“It was probably bad timing of me, but I use my social media as if it’s just my friends on it.”

Explaining that they thought the image was supposed to be funny, Sam added: “I posted with my humour and stuff, but it just didn’t get picked up very well, but I didn’t mean any malice by it at all.

“You know me, I’m always sharing all of my feelings all of the time and trying to be as human as possible but sometimes maybe people can read it wrongly but that wasn’t really meaning it in a malicious or nasty way, I was just trying to be myself.”

Sam is currently isolating at home and is seemingly finding it tricky, due to an ongoing battle with mental health.

The Government confirmed on Thursday that the UK would be extending lockdown for at least a further three weeks and Sam explained the news was “a little bit of a low”.

Sam, who identifies as gender non-binary, recently put their up-and-coming album To Die For on the back burner and plans to utilise the downtime to work on the album further, amid the outbreak.
