US TV legend Regis Philbin's cause of death confirmed by Chief Medical Examiner

The cause of death of American TV hosting legend Regis Philbin has been revealed after he died last Friday.

The talk show star was aged 88 when he passed away on Friday 24 July 2020 at a hospital in Greenwich, Connecticut – just one month away from what would have been his 89th birthday.

Now, just a little less than a week since the sad news of his passing, the cause of death of Regis has been revealed by the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Farmington, Connecticut.

According to PageSix, the legendary American TV star’s cause of death has been confirmed as a heart attack – with the medical examiner’s office recording it as a myocardial infarction due to coronary artery disease and hypertension.

Family and friends close to the TV icon have expressed their shock and sadness in the wake of the sad death.

Regis’ family said in a statement: “We are deeply saddened to share that our beloved Regis Philbin passed away last night of natural causes, one month shy of his 89th birthday.”

Kelly Ripa – who hosted the morning TV show ‘Live with’ alongside Regis between 2001 and 2011 – also paid tribute.

Sarah Ferguson appeared on Live With alongside Regis in 2000

She said: “As people get older, you always know that certain things are inevitable, and passing away is one of those things, but Regis is one of the people that we all believed, I think, would somehow figure out a way around the inevitable.”

The talk show king is survived by wife Joy, 79, and their two daughters Jennifer, 45, and Joanna, 47.

They said in a statement earlier this week: “He let everyone into his life.

The TV legend also hosted the US version of Who Wants to be A Millionaire?

“He turned every little daily annoyance and happiness into a story, and he shared all those little stories with people in a joyful and conversational way.

“It made his audience feel like they were right alongside him – because they were.”

With a career spanning back to the early 1970s, Regis has the honour of holding the Guinness World Record for the most hours on US television with over 16,540.5 hours spent in front of the cameras.
