Alastair Campbell apologises as he accidentally says 'Queen is dead' in GMB chat

Alastair Campbell left Good Morning Britain fans seriously confused after he mistakenly said the “Queen is dead” in an interview with Vinnie Jones.

He later apologised for the gaffe, explaining he meant the Queen’s late husband Prince Philip instead.

Eagle-eyed and baffled fans stormed twitter highlighting his on-air error.

One tweet read: “Please Confirm @GMB is the Queen dead?? #GMB”

Another remarked: “#GMB Death of the queen?”

A third penned: “Has @campbellclaret just told us, the Queen died? #gmb”

While a fourth exclaimed: “When did the Queen die? #GMB At least @piersmorgan doesn’t get confused.”

Speaking to Vinnie about his new book, he said: “We talked a lot about Prince Philip, you know obviously after the death of the Queen and one of the phrases that kept being used was something she said after September 11 – that statement that we had to take to New York.

“Grief is the prize we have to pay for love.

“And that’s kind of what comes out of your book.”

Alastair had clearly been tipped off by ITV producers that he’d made a red faced blunder on the show.

Cutting off the interview with football legend Vinnie Jones, the former Labour strategist issued apologies mid chat for the confusion.

Interrupting Vinne, he said: “Sorry, I think I may have just announced the death of the Queen. I meant Prince Philip.

Co-star Susanna helped to smooth over his slip of the tongue, adding “It’s ok, people knew what you meant”

Earlier in the show Alastair took aim at Susanna during an interview with Tony Blair

Susanna chose to defend her new colleague, even though he’d made a rude quip earlier on in the programme about her gender.

The on-screen hosts were busy interviewing former Labour leader Tony Blair, when his locks became a talking point on the show.

Susanna wondered if the former Prime Minister now had sympathy for women on TV after he’d becomes the butt of the joke for his long tresses.

She asked: Do you now sympathise with women on TV?”

Alastair rudely interjected: “Are you a woman?”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
