BBC Breakfast presenter Dan Walker has been forced to remind fans that Strictly Come Dancing is “just a TV show” amid ‘fix’ claims.
Dan successfully made it through to another week on Strictly after landing near the bottom of the leaderboard with his professional partner Nadiya Bychkova at the weekend.
The dance-off, meanwhile, came down to Tilly Ramsay and Dragons’ Den star Sara Davies, the latter of whom was eventually voted off by the judges.
But now Dan has expressed his befuddlement at “who is voting for” him in the competition after initially responding to criticism from media outlets.
Writing on social media, he said: “Please don’t shout at me,” followed by a cry-laughing emoji.
He added: “I’m having an amazing time, my kids are delighted & it’s only a TV show! For those asking, I don’t know who is voting for us (probably not Craig) but we’re incredibly thankful to everyone who is.
“See you next week. Can’t wait.”
Dan had performed an American Smooth with Nadiya to King of the Road by The Proclaimers, receiving mixed feedback for their routine – with Craig Revel Horwood awarding them a measly four points.
He insisted the dance “lacked any feeling” despite Dan’s excitement in the run-up.
It comes after Dan hit out at the media for questioning how he is still in the competition, responding to a headline which read: “How is Dan still in TV show?”
He wrote on Instagram: “I’m not sure but we are incredibly thankful for all the support and it’s a true privilege to be a small part of the biggest show on the telly.
“I know articles like this are sourced from a few comments on social media but each week I get thousands of messages from people who love the show and are really enjoying watching @nadiyabychkova teaching me to dance.
“When I’ve watched Strictly in the past I have always liked seeing great dancers but also those who learn to love it and are working hard to improve every week. It’s a TV show and not the world championships.”
Dan added: “I never thought I would be able to do some of the things Nadiya has taught me. She has given me a confidence that I thought was way beyond me. I just want to learn as many dances as possible.
“Anyway… on with the American Smooth. Whoever you vote for this weekend… I hope you enjoy the show. I will continue to do it with a massive smile on my face.”
Simultaneously, rumours of a ‘fix’ have been echoing around the Strictly debate, with axed contestant Adam Peaty’s mum slamming the show as a “total fix”, adding: “I’m not buying the public vote.”
Strictly Come Dancing continues on Saturday at 6:45pm on BBC One.
