Coronation Street fans spot glaring retirement blunder as Sam becomes footie fan

Coronation Street fans spotted a huge blunder during Monday night’s visit to the cobbles, as youngster Sam decided to become a Weatherfield County supporter.

Young Sam was thankfully rescued from his sick kidnapping plot, orchestrated by Sharon and her nephew Harvey, and was joined at the hospital by dad Nick and mum Natasha.

Sam decided to become a Weathy County fan after hearing some football news on the radio while being held in the back of a van.

And as he began reciting various football facts to his parents, fans realised something might be amiss in soapland sports.

As Sam mentioned Weathy County soccer player Tommy Orpington – and recited his impressive goal-scoring statistics – fans flocked to social media to point out a confusing gaffe on the cobbles.

Many thought Tommy should definitely be past retirement age by now.

“Poor Tommy O… Banging in 20 goals a season, and not the slightest bit of interest from any club in a higher league!” one commented.

Another chimed in: “How old is Tommy Orpington by now?”

As another said: “Tommy Orpington. Isn’t it time he retired?”

“The Orp getting BIG coverage tonight! #Corrie,” chipped in a fourth social media user.

As someone else giggled: “Another Tommy O mention!”

Others were much more concerned about how Sam actually managed to get out of the van after police rushed to inform Nick and Natasha that he’d been found.

“How did he magically get out of the van? I must have nodded off,” someone tweeted, as another viewer asked: “Shouldn’t the police be asking Sam questions about his disappearance?”

“Are they going to tell us how he got out of that van?” someone else queried.

Sam luckily found a packed lunch in the back of the van, which prevented him from starving – which may have been placed there in advance from Sharon, who smiled knowingly when David informed her and Shona that Sam had feasted on cake and crisps.

He had been battering on the van doors and screaming for help when the van’s engine started and the vehicle began to move.

Elsewhere in Monday’s episode, Tyrone and Alina’s romance seemed on shaky footing as it was revealed that Tyrone had taken on some night shifts at Dev’s shop.

He was struggling to afford school shoes for his girls, and the expensive coffee machine and cups Alina wanted for the flat.

And his grandmother Evelyn had a few snazzy one-liners to put in, as she dubbed her grandson “Tyrone two-flats”.

As Alina showed up, Evelyn announced: “Mr Dobbs, your fancy piece has arrived!” – leaving fans in hysterics.
