Coronation Street star Paula Lane has spoken out after her four-year-old daughter was told by another child that she was “too fat” to take part in their game.
Paula, who played Coronation Street’s Kylie Platt, was emotional after hearing about the cruel jibe towards her daughter Penny – saying it made her “head spin”.
The 35-year-old mother-of-two, who also has a six-year-old son Arthur with her fellow actor husband Tom Shaw, spoke out to mark Mental Health Awareness Week.
Speaking on Twitter, the star has urged parents on social media to teach their children to be kind after the upsetting experience.
She tweeted: “My four-year-old daughter came home last night and said that a child not much older had said she was too fat to play their game.
“Made my head spin. Let’s teach our children to be kind.”
Paula, who played the late wife of David Platt from 2010 until 2016 when the character was tragically stabbed to death by Clayton Hibbs, received a flock of online support after opening up to fans.
One Twitter user said: “I agree with you.
“We need to teach our children to be kinder. The comment makes my head spin too.”
A second follower tweeted: “Wow they are getting younger. I had a situation last week where my son was pinned to the floor by three kids while the fourth was kicking him, they are nine. My son has special needs too.”
And Paula replied with a heart emoji when one told her: “My motto and what I always instilled into my girl ‘have courage and be kind.’
“Your little girl is smashing! She will rise above this.”
Last year, we reported that parents were fearing their children were suffering mental health problems as a result of UK lockdowns.
After Corrie, Paula played the character of Rachel in Be More Martyn, a celebration of the life of Corrie superfan Martyn Hett, and Lauren in the UK tour of Kinky Boots.

Paula’s character had a tragic departure from the ITV soap when Kylie was stabbed to death outside the kebab shop by Clayton Hibbs after buying champagne to celebrate a new start for her family in Barbados with her half sister Becky McDonald.
After Kylie’s death David, played by Jack P Shepherd, went on to find love with Clayton’s mum Shona Ramsey.
