I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! fans were left gobsmacked on Monday night, as footballing legend David Ginola explained how he once died for 12 minutes.
The star was working out in the Clink after being relegated there with his teammates following the first Bushtucker Trial of the series.
But he wasn’t letting his fitness routine slip for a second, as he was busy completing a workout in the castle.
Emmerdale star Danny Miller couldn’t help remarking to Strictly’s Arlene Phillips: “I think I’ve got a man crush.”
In the Telegraph, Arlene added: “Whatever he does, it’s so strong. And he’s so beautiful. And he does it all with this very calm, quiet, centred way. It’s a great visual, I’m quite enjoying it!”
Arlene asked David: “What exercise do you now do? Daily? Weekly?”
David explained that he does 100-150 press ups per day, and 200-300 sit-ups, adding: “Not too much, just enough.”
DJ Naughty Boy then asked him: “Is that true about something that happened to you?”, clarifying: “You died and came back?”
David explained: “I passed away for 12 minutes.”
Naughty Boy responded: “I didn’t think that was possible.”
David then launched into the story, as he said: “Just playing football and at one stage you just fall on the floor. So they have to perform CPR for 12 minutes and they arrive with the defibrillator and they shocked me one time, two times, three times… they said, ‘I think your friend is dead.’
“A fourth, fifth time… the fifth time, a heartbeat. Yeah… the surgeon said, ‘You’ve been very lucky David, it’s a miracle. In your condition 9 out of 10 would have died.’”
The star continued: “When you come back from that you just have your mind full of questions; ‘Is it a message, am I going back for a second life for a purpose?’ Because when you’re fighting when you’re dead, you’re on the crossroads… there’s life and death.”
GMB’s Richard Madeley – who lost his dad to a heart condition – then added: “I guess some people just have an innately stronger survival instinct than other people.”
In the Telegraph, Richard later said: “Here’s a good example of how quickly we’ve become very, very close actually in here and very open with each other. Now that is a big story to tell. You don’t ask somebody lightly to talk about that.”
Reflecting on the incident, David said: “It’s one of a kind, because you don’t have any warnings. You could just walk like this and boom, fall over and it’s over.
“It is crazy when you think about it. Come on, let’s cook some rice. We need some rice and beans to get stuck in!”
Fans quickly turned to social media to share their impressions of the story, with one writing: “David Ginola talking about his heart attack and how there were no signs before is probably the biggest ‘Life your life as it could be taken at any moment’ message!
“To think it was only a few years back and how strong he is now!”
Another echoed: “David Ginola is so manly he seasons his meat with pepper spray!”
“Tearing up at David’s story,” someone else said, as a fourth followed up: “Wow, what a conversation David Ginola. Lesson for everyone, be thankful for every day, be kind.”
