EastEnders former legal expert knocks 'far-fetched' serial killer soap storyline

EastEnders ‘ former legal advisor has said the show is “too far-fetched” following one of its recent storylines.

The scene in question saw serial killer Lucas Johnson, played by Don Gilet, being released from prison.

The monster was free to return to Albert Square despite murdering at least five people.

But Nazir Afzal, who has worked with the writers for years, thinks the twist is unrealistic.

He told Daily Star: “I always understood drama outweighs reality. But Lucas being back after multiple murders is a stretch.”

Nazir is a former chief crown prosecutor known for tackling exploitation and worked on the soap for many years to help its storyline run legally smoothly.

He has also been hired as an advisor on dramas including Spooks, Law & Order: UK and Three Girls.

Even actor Don has said he was “shocked” bosses had brought his character back.

Scores of viewers also think Lucas being freed was a farce.

Taking to Twitter, one tweeted: “It’s rubbish.”

Another said: “No wonder clients believe this is what really happens as that’s all they have to relate to in some situations.”

And another added: “Often the producers ignore advice in favour of a more dramatic or script-enabling device, hence we see people in intensive care on nasal specs oxygen rather than a realistic intubation, so they can speak.”

EastEnders has been in crisis for months.

The Christmas Day episode pulled in just 3.5million viewers, a third fewer than in 2019.

EastEnders is a British soap which has been broadcast by the BBC since 1985 and is set in Albert Square in London’s East End in the fictional Borough of Walford.

The programme airs on Monday at 8pm, Tuesday and Thursday at 7.30pm and Friday at 8pm.
