Fetty Wap's childhood accident that made him lose vision in one eye

Fetty Wap, whose real name is Willie Maxwell II, rose to prominence in 2015 for his single Trap Queen.

The rapper’s song reached No 1 on Billboard’s Hot Rap Songs chart, and he became a huge name.

After becoming a big name, fans became curious after noticing he only had one eye.

After a concert at the MTV Movie Awards in 2015, fans started flooding Twitter with comments such as: “I didn’t know Fetty Wap has only one eye. Cool”.

And: “What happened to Fetty Wap’s eye?”

Several stories started circulating about what had happened to the American rapper, including some far-fetched stories about him being involved in a shooting incident.

Fetty Wap refrained from commenting on the topic for a long time, but after years of speculation, he finally decided to address the rumours.

What happened to Fetty Wap’s eye?

In 2015, the 679 hitmaker revealed in an interview that his missing eye was due to a tragic childhood accident.

He sat down his DJ Self on Shade 45, and explained that he would usually tell people “it’s nothing, because it’s really nothing to me”.

However, he went on to tell the story: “When I was little, I had gotten into a little accident and it gave me congenital glaucoma in both of my eyes.

“The doctor saved one, I was blessed to still have my vision. That’s it. That’s the story.”

Childhood glaucoma, or congenital glaucoma, is a condition where the optic nerve becomes damaged.

The NHS explains: “It’s usually caused by fluid building up in the front part of the eye, which increases pressure inside the eye.

“Glaucoma can lead to loss of vision if it’s not diagnosed and treated early.”

Fetty now has a vacant bloodshot space below his eyelid.

In the same interview, the rapper explained how he has no problems with it.

He said: “I’m probably one of the first rappers/singers to come on the scene with one eye and be comfortable with it.”

However, he said “a lot of people are judgmental”, but that it’s “all on how you show yourself to the people”.

Fetty Wap added: “That’s probably one of the main things people won’t know about me until they see me.”

After the accident Fetty was provided with a prothetic eye, but he decided to get rid of it as a teenager as he became more comfortable with his disability.

He even made his eye the main focal point of his self-titled debut album.

After speaking out, Fetty inspired a young fan to take out his own prosthetic eye.

Jayden Vaden’s mum revealed her son had been diagnosed with Retinoblastoma, and now felt brave enough to live without his prosthetic eye.
