Kate Garraway has revealed she once got a little bit too close to a giraffe as one was shown on TV this morning as the host and Richard Madeley praised the “extraordinary” animals.
As a clip of a giraffe eating from Chessington was shown on Good Morning Britain this morning, Kate and Richard were talking as a voice over while the pair fawned over the animals.
Kate shared her amazement at their “extraordinarily long tongues”, as she recalled her awkward moment with one.
She said: “I once had a giraffe take some food out of my mouth. In Kenya, I was eating a croissant and it wasn’t even that close! It was all tongue action.
“They are amazing, amazing animals.”
The pair were laughing away as the 54-year-old shared her awkward encounter.
Richard agreed, before adding that when he heads home he normally drives past London Zoo and he said he would often stop to look at the animals.
One user wrote on Twitter: “So Kate likes a giraffe’s tongue action…”
While another was left convinced that Kate was waiting for Richard to follow up with a story of his own, writing: “Kate is waiting for Madeley to say something embarrassing…”
Kate’s revelation came shortly after both Richard and Kate invited a panel of guests on to discuss the NHS 3% pay rise offer with three NHS workers and someone who had been hospitalised with Covid-19.
As the panel shared their reasoning for believing they should have a higher pay increase, Kate supported the decision after recalling how much support the NHS, particularly nurses, have been throughout the pandemic.
When Richard asked how she feels due to her husband Derek’s life being saved by the NHS, Kate said: “If it was up to me you couldn’t pay them enough.

“It’s absolutely extraordinary what all members of the NHS did, but particularly nurses, their detail. They were getting their head around technology, it’s the detail in a critical situation like that with a virus that nobody knew at the point when Derek got sick, the impact it was going to have.
“The detail of blood pressure and cell count, a lot of that is all passed to the nurses and very much on their shoulders. It’s getting that right that makes all the difference.”
GMB continues tomorrow on ITV from 6am.
