This week, former EastEnders actor Jake Wood claimed that a ghost has been haunting Lily Allen’s dressing room at the Noel Coward Theatre.
The actor, 49, and the singer, 36, are currently starring in the petrifying play 2:22 A Ghost Story.
And while the pair have been acting out other-worldly goings on in the West End, the spirit of Sir Charles Wyndham – who built the iconic theatre in the early 1900s – has been spookily paying a visit to Lily’s dressing room.
Jake said: “Apparently, the Noel Coward Theatre is haunted. The guy that built it, Charles Wyndham, still haunts the stage.
“If you see him he walks across the stage and goes into the dressing room downstairs, which is fine because that’s Lily Allen’s dressing room.”
We take a look at the other supposedly haunted theatres.
Theatre Royal, Drury Lane
Dating back to 1663, this London venue has been dubbed one of the world’s most haunted theatres.
The most famous ghost is the Man in Grey, who appears during matinees in a long grey coat and tricorn hat.
In the 1840s, a skeleton in grey rags with a knife through his heart was discovered on the spot where the ghost disappears.
The ghosts of Charles Macklin – who killed another actor in a row over a wig in 1735 – and clown Joseph Grimaldi are also said to haunt the theatre.
Sunderland Empire
Carry On actor Sid James suffered a fatal heart attack on stage at this venue in 1976 – and his spectre is said to still tread the boards.
Even comic Les Dawson refused to set foot in the Empire again after spotting Sid in his dressing room mirror during a 1989 panto stint and then feeling a stabbing pain in his chest.
Adelphi Theatre
Famed actor William Terriss met a sticky end when he was stabbed to death by deranged fellow thesp Richard Archer Prince at the London theatre’s stage door in 1897.
As he died, his lover Jessie Millward heard him whisper: “I will come back.”
He is now said to haunt both the theatre and the nearby Covent Garden Tube station.
Liverpool Playhouse
A cleaner called Elizabeth was killed here in 1897 when the iron curtain came down on stage, struck her and she broke her neck falling into the orchestra pit.
Despite her death being recorded as an accident, the water-powered fire iron needed someone to operate it.
She is said to haunt the gallery level, in particular seat A5 which is always cold.
Edinburgh Playhouse
Attend a performance here and you might bump into Albert, a man in a grey coat who appears on level six.
A stagehand who died alone in the building one night, his existence came to light in the 1950s.
As one tale goes, a break-in was reported to police and the young officer dispatched to investigate had a conversation with Albert – only to learn the next day he had died years ago.
York Theatre Royal
It is said a room behind the dress circle is haunted by the Grey Lady – a young nun who fell in love with a nobleman.
But when this was discovered, she was thrown into a windowless room that was bricked up with no escape.
But if the nun in her grey habit is spotted in the dress circle, it is seen as a good omen for that night’s production.
