Justin Bieber confesses his first year of marriage to wife Hailey was 'tough'

Justin Bieber has explained he is a better person today thanks to his wife Hailey Baldwin – but it wasn’t always plain sailing for the pair.

In a recent heartfelt interview, the 27-year-old spoke candidly about their initial struggles after tying the knot.

The iconic couple, who got engaged in July 2018 and married nearly three months later at a New York City courthouse, actually got off to a bumpy start.

According to the Lonely hitmaker, he and Hailey were plagued by past “trauma” which resulted in a “lack of trust” in their relationship.

But after three years of marriage, they are certainly on a much better path now.

Speaking to GQ in the candid discussion, the singer said: “The first year of marriage was really tough. Because there was a lot, going back to the trauma stuff. There was just lack of trust.

“There was all these things that you don’t want to admit to the person that you’re with, because it’s scary.

“You don’t want to scare them off by saying, ‘I’m scared.'”

During the first year after saying ‘I do,’ Justin also explained that he felt as though he was “on eggshells”.

But he claims as a couple they’ve come a long way and are looking forward to building memories together.

The child star credited his model wife for turning his entire life around.

He added: “My home life was unstable. Like, my home life was not existing. I didn’t have a significant other. I didn’t have someone to love. I didn’t have someone to pour into. But now I have that.”

Justin has always been open about his battle with mental health, once describing himself as the “most hated person in the world” in a social media post on the subject.

In 2019, the star, who shot to fame at the age of 13, took to Instagram to explain himself and even hinted he had been responsible for tarnishing relationships.

“I became resentful, disrespectful to women and angry,” he wrote.

“I became distant to everyone who loved me… I felt like I could never turn it around.”

The Canadian star later penned: “I made every bad decision you could have thought of and went from one of the most loved and adored people in the world to the most ridiculed, judged and hated person in the world.”

Signing off he added: “All this to say even when the odds are against you, keep fighting.”
