TV presenter Kate Garraway has revealed her husband Derek feared every breath was his last as he battled coronavirus.
The Good Morning Britain host and her husband have experienced a year from hell after Derek, 53, was admitted to hospital with Covid.
He was forced to stay in a hospital bed for over a year as he battled the life-threatening disease.
And Kate, also 53, revealed Derek made the heartbreaking confession to her that he felt like he was “locked in a mask thinking every second you’re going to die”.
It was reported how Derek sent “desperate” texts to his wife as he feared his life was slipping away.
And in Kate’s new memoir The Power of Hope, which is being serialised in the Mail on Sunday, the TV personality stressed to her husband to be positive despite talking about funeral services.
“I want you at the funeral, but I’m not sure about the children,” Derek told Kate.
And one evening he told his wife “how bad it is” as he struggled to breathe.
He texted Kate to say: “It is unimaginable. I literally feel like I’m drowning and every breath is my last.
“Please tell them both I love them. The doctor says there’s no chance of me dying. I just have to keep going.”

And in a heartwarming message to his wife, Derek praised her for standing by his side during arguably the worst year of their lives.
“I love you,” said Derek. “You saved my life. And I don’t just mean now because I’m going into the coma to help me.
“I mean, everything, with the children, the family, our wonderful life. You saved me.”
Kate and their two children were not allowed to visit Derek in hospital during the height of the pandemic.
But throughout the harrowing ordeal, the family has stood strong, with Kate appearing in a one-hour special ITV documentary which followed the Garraways struggles since Derek was first admitted to hospital.
Derek has since been taking off all medical machines and breathing apparatus, but has suffered long-term heart, lungs, liver, pancreas and kidney damage after Covid ravaged his body.
Derek became the UK’s longest-serving Covid patient – and a brave Kate has supported her husband throughout the harrowing ordeal.
