Meghan Markle shares sweet hidden flower tribute to Diana in new book

Meghan Markle has announced she paid a sweet tribute to Princess Diana in her latest book, The Bench, in her exclusive new interview.

This comes after Meghan has given her first official interview since her explosive sit-down chat with Oprah Winfrey alongside her husband Prince Harry.

The mum-of-two gave the pre-recorded radio interview just before the birth of her daughter Lilibet and spoke to Samantha Balabal for the NPR Weekend Edition show, called Picture This.

Meghan and Harry welcomed their baby Lilibet on June 4 at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in California, and the couple said she is “more than we could have ever imagined”.

Her new book was published just four days later on June 8 – and it has now gone on to become a No1 New York Times bestselling book.

Now, it has emerged that Meghan’s new book contains a heartfelt nod to the late Princess of Wales – Harry’s mum – in the form of one of her favourite flowers.

Whilst discussing personal tributes and memories that she featured in the book, Meghan said she included Diana’s favourite flower in the bestseller.

She told NPR: “There are lots of little small moments like that that were personal memories or anecdotes that I wanted infused in there.”

Interviewer Samantha noted some of these personal anecdotes included her favourite flower, her mother-in-law Diana’s favourite flower, and the family’s rescue chickens.

“I needed my girls in there,” said Meghan.

Diana’s favourite flower is known as forget-me-nots – gorgeous white perennial flowers which grow every year and bloom between late spring and early summer.

In Diana’s honour, there will be a commemorative statue unveiled on July 1 to mark what would be the late princess’ 60th birthday.

The installation will take place in the Sunken Garden of Kensington Palace on July 1, 2021 – which was one of Diana’s favourite spots to visit.

The Bench was originally inspired by a Father’s Day poem which Meghan wrote for Harry, and the relationship that Harry enjoys with their two-year-old son Archie.

The story is told from the perspective of a mother and according to the publishers it “touchingly captures the evolving and expanding relationship between fathers and sons and reminds us of the many ways that love can take shape and be expressed in a modern family”.

She told Samantha: “I often find, and especially in this past year, I think so many of us realised how much happens in the quiet.

“It was definitely moments like that, watching them from out of the window and watching [my husband] just, you know, rock him to sleep or carry him or, you know … those lived experiences, from my observation, are the things that I infused in this poem.”

Meghan added: “It’s a love story. It’s really just about growing with someone and having this deep connection and this trust so that, be at good times or bad, you know that you had this person.

“I really hope that people can see this as a love story that transcends the story of my family.”
