Mike Tindall has said the Royals were told “you all need to leave” following Prince Philip’s funeral proceedings earlier this month, as he reflected on the sombre day.
During an appearance on Good Morning Britain, the 42-year-old, who is married to Princess Anne’s daughter Zara, described the ceremony, which took place on April 17.
The rugby player admitted he felt great sympathy towards the Queen on the day, as she sat alone during the event due to coronavirus restrictions.
“I think that’s what she does, she leads by example and you say, ‘amazing to see’, but I didn’t really want to see it, but everyone’s seen it now,” Mike said, speaking to hosts Ben Shephard and Kate Garraway.
“And even after the funeral it was sort of, ‘you all need to leave’, so you didn’t even get to have that supportive side afterwards.”
Mike continued: “I think the way that the funeral was planned and run was exceptional and for Zara, it was seeing his carriage ponies and the gloves and the sugar cube box and all that lined up.
“If he was looking down I think, being in the middle of a pandemic where it was more low key, I think he probably would have been more happy with that even though the rest of us probably would have liked it to be more of a celebration, but that’s the man that he was.”
Mike and Zara first got to know one another during England’s Rugby World Cup-winning campaign in Australia in 2003, after getting introduced to one another in a bar.
He proposed in 2010, with Buckingham Palace announcing the happy engagement in December.
The following July, they walked down the aisle at Canongate Kirk in Edinburgh, with 400 guests – including several members of the Royal family – in attendance.
Their third child, son Lucas Philip, was born in March of last year, becoming a little brother to their daughters Mia Grace and Lena Elizabeth.
Mike opened up about his son’s birth on GMB, saying: “It’s been a little bit of a rollercoaster of emotions in terms of highs and lows but he’s been brilliant to be fair.
“It’s nice to have a boy around to keep me company. The girls are outnumbering me by quite a number so it’s nice to have Lucas around.”
“He’s been so far – touch wood – he’s been great in terms of his sleeping and eating and doing everything that a five-week-old does,” Mike added.
Good Morning Britain airs on weekdays at 6am on ITV.
