Naga Munchetty pays tribute to BBC colleague after sharing loss live on air

Naga Munchetty has paid a touching tribute to a BBC colleague live on air.

The BBC Breakfast host, 46, spoke about a member of the production team behind her BBC Radio 5 Live show, who had recently lost her great-uncle.

Reaching out to Kate live on air ahead of her beloved family member’s funeral this week, Naga paid a sweet tribute.

The topic of discussion was the importance of grandads, following Prince Harry and Prince William’s own tributes to their grandfather Prince Philip earlier this week.

Naga told her 5 Live listeners on Wednesday: “We’re talking about grandads this morning.

“We’re talking about how they may have shaped your lives and your family’s lives and the influence they may have had.”

But for Kate, who didn’t have the chance to know either of her grandads, it was her great-uncle Jim who filled that role.

Naga explained: “What Kate says is: ‘He and I shared a love of reading. For my 11th birthday, he gave me this book he’d read about in the paper and he thought it sounded good.

“‘It was the first Harry Potter. The book he gave me was a first edition which he’d just walked into the shop and picked up, it was that early on the bandwagon.

“‘That book got passed around my siblings and all my cousins until it’s not got much monetary value anymore because of its condition, but I’ll always cherish it as a piece of my Uncle Jim.”

Poor Naga was struggling with her lockdown locks recently, and asked a guest on her radio show how to deal with her unruly hair.

“I have lockdown hair and I have the option of chopping it all off as I am getting to that point – that half way point,” she said on the programme.

Though she sports a pixie cut, Naga was torn between growing it out or chopping it all off.

“I can’t bear it anymore,” she continued. “It’s like a big thatch on top of my head!”

The hair expert responded: “Your hair always looks fabulous, so I wouldn’t worry.”

Naga was forced to cut her own hair during the lockdown last year, sharing a snap of her taking the scissors to the back of her head.

The host likened her hair to a “birds nest” on the programme – though she presumably hasn’t gone as far as she did in 2020.

Now that the hairdressers have opened up once again, she’ll be able to get her locks professionally tamed once more.
