Phillip Schofield fights tears as he wins LGBT Award after coming out aged 57

Phillip Schofield was overcome with emotion as he celebrated winning an LGBT award.

It was the first he received since he came out at the age of 57, and likened the process of coming out to jumping out of a plane.

The star, now 59, first came out back in February 2020.

He is away on holiday at the moment so accepted the LGBT Special Recognition award with a tearful video message.

The broadcaster began: “Wow. This is a biggie. What a proud moment for me personally.”

He explained emotionally, “I’ve never won any award individually,” as he has won many awards before with This Morning.

The star was overwhelmed

“Any award you win as a team that’s there propping you up and definitely that’s the case with this one.”

He continued: “I had the most extraordinary people that helped me pack the parachute before the jump. Friends and family, loved ones and then there were an enormous amount of rainbow arms outstretched to catch me when I reached the bottom of my jump…”

He couldn’t believe the recognition

However he was keen to stress: “Life is a still a work in progress, but of course aren’t we all?”

“But it’s been joyous to meet the people I have, to have heard the lovely things they’ve said to me and share a moment like this with you. I wish I was there. I’m sorry I’m not. I am enormously proud.”
