Piers Morgan branded 'hypocrite' in backlash over Princess Diana tribute

Piers Morgan has been hit with some rather unexpected backlash after he penned an emotional tribute to Princess Diana on what would have been her 60th birthday.

The ex-Good Morning Britain host took to Twitter to share a tribute on the late Royal’s birthday on Thursday, but has since been branded a “hypocrite” for his words.

Piers posted a picture of his younger self alongside Diana as they both smiled, with Piers holding a glass of fizz in one hand.

Piers wrote: “Princess Diana would have been 60 today. She was a charismatic, smart, beautiful, contrary, sensitive, funny, unforgiving & mischievous lady with a massive generous heart.

“Biggest star in the world but I think all her demons were driven by one thing: she just wanted to be loved,” he surmised.

And though some of Piers’ 7.9million Twitter followers reached out to tell him that they thought it was an “amazing” tribute to such a wonderful princess, others weren’t quite as happy.

Many were quick to point out that Diana would be “mortified” by some of the things Piers has said about her “resilient” sons.

One Twitter user replied to the post to say: “If someone spoke about you like this, while simultaneously speaking of one of your children the way you do, you wouldn’t stand for it I’m sure.

“Diana would be mortified at some of the things you wrote about her resilient youngest [son].”

Someone else quickly followed up with: “Hmmm. Question Piers, how would she take your constant take down of Harry and his wife?”, as a third simply branded him a “true hypocrite”.

“This gobsh*** doesn’t deserve to speak about Princess Diana or her family!” another social media user penned. “His manic obsession with Harry & Meghan is sick.”

Someone else said: “As a present, could you stop harassing the mother of her grandchild then?”

It came on the same day as the unveiling of a statue of the late princess by her sons Prince Harry and Prince William – their first time reuniting since the funeral of Prince Philip.

And of course Piers had to have his say in his Mail Online column, as he suggested the friendly relationship between the brothers could be “deceptive”.

He went as far as comparing William and Harry’s current status to that of Michael Corleone and Fredo in The Godfather 2, as the former “warmly embraced and kissed his brother Fredo at a New Year’s Eye party before whispering ‘I know it was you, you broke my heart’ and later having him shot.”

He added: “William and Harry’s feud would have broken Diana’s heart.”
