Queen's bond with 'favourite' royal Princess Alexandra – 'mirroring' to 'unspoken looks'

Princess Alexandra and Queen Elizabeth II ‘mirror one another’, according to a new documentary.

The 84-year-old cousin of the country’s reigning monarch, 95, is the subject of the forthcoming Channel 5 documentary Princess Alexandra: The Queen’s Confidant, which will air later tonight (August 28).

Alexandra, who is the godmother of Prince Andrew, 61, has been one of the Queen’s most faithful companions over the year.

As well as supporting the Queen in private moments, the pair also regularly attend races at ascot and official royal ceremonies together and the documentary suggests that Alexandra is a great support to the queen during public engagements.

It also suggests the duo have ‘very similar outlooks on life’, which contributes to their strong bond.

A royal commentator on the programme said: “You can see that many times when they do these events together that Alexandra is always a boost to moral for the queen.

She added: “You can see a lot of mirroring as people say.

“Their clothes are very similar. Their smiles are very similar. Their outlooks are very similar and that has clearly comes from years and years of friendship.”

Another said: “They have that mutual understanding and that warmth. They have those unspoken looks. Those shared smiles. That shared laughter and amusement that indicates how close these two women really are.

A third commentator remarked: “They do seem, they always have, seemed to compliment one another.

“Princess Alexandra certainly always seems to be up there. A real favourite.”

The documentary will also dig into Princess Alexandra’s marriage to her late husband, Sir Angus Ogilvy.

In the 1960s, the pair were papped on their honeymoon in some allegedly comprising positions.

The photos were never published, though the close shave is thought to have led to Alexandra become the discrete royal she is today.

Princess Alexandra: The Queen’s Confidant airs tonight at 8.30pm on Channel 5.

It’s been a year like no other for the Queen from the loss of her husband to heartache over Prince Harry. But Her Majesty has also had a lot of cause for celebration, including the birth of baby Lilibet. To mark what a year the Queen has had, OK! Magazine is bringing you a limited edition collector’s issue. Get your hands on it here.
