Richard Bacon emotionally says it feels like 'welcome home' as he makes GMB debut

Richard Bacon made an emotional arrival to Good Morning Britain on Wednesday morning as he said he was told “welcome home”.

He made his first appearance alongside Charlotte Hawkins, and revealed his excitement to be in the hot seat, replacing Piers Morgan on the show.

The former Blue Peter presenter revealed: “Richard Arnold just said “Welcome home” to me before out in the corridor. I was quite touched, it was quite sweet. It’s great to be here. It’s very exciting.”

Richard, 45, also revelled in his joy about the GMB voiceover: “The voiceover at the beginning, live the from Television Centre, it feels big!”

Co-host Charlotte Hawkins, 46, added: “The excitement building!” as they played it again.

“Feels a little less big the second time”, joked Richard.

He talked about his career so far: “I haven’t done this for a couple of years, I live in America now where I have a slightly silly job, basically, inventing game shows and producing game shows which is a strange thing to do in the world.”

Richard added: “To actually come back and do this, you know, my first love is news and current affairs and to actually come back and talk about things that matter…”

Charlotte interjected: “You’ve joined us in quite a week, I have to say there’s a lot going on at the moment!”

The presenter agreed: “So much going on in the world! Stuff that is heartbreaking and and in some ways, sort of suffocating to witness.”

“To be here and talk about it and speak to the people we have on the show, the Home Secretary is coming up later. This is a fascinating thing.”

Stunning Charlotte explained a few things to the newcomer: “I mean, a few things have changed obviously, post-COVID, we’re a bit further away aren’t we at the moment but you get used to how things work.”

Richard joked: “Do we shout at our guests? They’re so far away!”

Kevin Maguire replied: “Use hand gestures?”

Richard replied: “Thankfully, I can lip read, Kevin, so I think I think I’ll be okay.”

Fans are pleased with Richard so far: “Richard Bacon is very good, GMB! Try and keep him” said one.

“Have to say I thought Richard Bacon was impressive in his questioning and manner” added another.

One fan raved: “Yay, love Richard Bacon, can we have him full time please?”
