Sir Rod Stewart gifted huge self portrait after Royal Variety performance backlash

76-year-old hitmaker Sir Rod Stewart took to Instagram to share a picture of one of his most treasured Christmas gifts this week.

The Do You Think I’m Sexy singer could be seen grinning next to a giant painting of himself, which he had received from his pal Ronnie Wood.

The music star was gifted the Christmas present a week after ITV viewers were left unimpressed with his appearance at The Royal Variety Performance hosted by Alan Carr – with many tweeting about how ‘awful’ Sir Rod’s performance was.

In the Instagram post revealing Ronnie’s present, a very ‘perplexed’ Rod can be seen sitting beside the humongous painting of himself, as he posed in a black vest, white shirt and pinstripe trousers whilst he was carrying a trombone.

He captioned the photo: “Ronnie’s portrait of me for my Christmas present… looking perplexed but at ease with life.”

“Thanks mate. I’m also learning to play the trombone for no apparent reason.. Sir Rod”.

The impressive picture, done in charcoal, features Sir Rod from the shoulders up, looking dapper with his iconic hairstyle.

The two hit-makers, Rod and Ronnie, 74, have been pals since the late 60s when they were both members of the group Faces.

Although the band parted ways in 1975, the pair kept in touch, with Rod serving as best man to Ronnie’s wedding to Sally Humphreys in 2012.

The pair continue to post pictures together on social media, keeping fans in the loop of their friendship.

Sir Rod Stewart sang in front of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at this year’s Royal Variety Performance at the Royal Albert Hall; however, fans were unhappy with his performance, with many branding it as “awful” on Twitter.

One fan posted at the time: “Rod Stewart… I literally have no words for that performance #RoyalVarietyPerformance.”

However, plenty more viewers were enthralled with Rod’s performance, as one posted: “Love a bit of Rod. Great performance and love the leopard Leopard print outfit.”

Someone else said: “#RoyalVarietyPerformance here’s a daring idea. If you don’t like it, don’t watch it, instead of criticising everything. Some of us are enjoying it.”

Rod invited fans to have a glimpse of his Christmas as he shared a sweet snap of himself with his wife and model, Penny Lancaster, 50, and their son Alastair on Instagram on Saturday.
