What happened to the My Family cast next – Disney, career change and therapy

BBC’s sitcom My Family was a much loved TV show that gripped the nation on a weekly basis.

Filled with impressive anecdotes and outlandish situations, the programme was one that was bound to put a smile on viewers’ faces.

The hilariously funny show documented the charmingly chaotic lives of married couple Ben and Susan Harper and their three children Nick, Janey and Michael.

Broadcasted on BBC One, the show had 11 series and ran from the year 2000 until it ended in 2011.

During its peak, the sitcom was voted 24th in the BBC’s Britain’s Best Sitcom in 2004. Four years later it became the most watched sitcom in the United Kingdom.

But although the popular show entertained the nation for several years, many have wondered where the cast are now.

Daily Star has taken a look at what the stars did next.

Robert Lindsay as Ben Harper

Misunderstood and easily irritated father Ben Harper was often known for his fast wit and comical timing.

Played by British actor Robert Lindsay, 71, the star was already a well known name in the acting circuit before his remarkable role in My Family.

Since the show ended in 2011, Robert continued to develop his career in theatre and has been continually applauded for his work in a number of stage productions following his work on shows at the Royal Shakespeare Company, the West End and on Broadway.

But the actor hasn’t abandoned his on screen performances just yet. His most recent TV appearance was in McDonald & Dodds in 2020 where he played the character Max Crockett.

He also starred in the Disney film Maleficent: Mistress of Evil in 2019 alongside actress Angelina Jolie.

Robert shares three children with his actress wife Rosemarie Ford.

In 2011, the actor confessed that he had suffered from depressive episodes and symptoms of seasonal affective disorder during the winter months for most of his life.

Robert has since spoken positively about the experience he had with light therapy and counselling, stating that “they really do work”.

Actress Zoë Wanamaker played the eccentric mother Susan Harper in My Family.

Before appearing on the BBC sitcom, Zoë, 72, was also a relatively well known actress and is the daughter of late actor Sam Wanamaker.

After the show had ended in 2011 the star continued working and starred in in award-winning TV shows such as Mr Selfridge, Agatha Christie’s Poirot and Prime Suspect.

Audiences may also remember her for her role as Professor Hooch in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

Zoë’s recent television credits include Inside No. 9, Killing Eve, Britannia and Worzel Gummidge.

The actress married actor Gawn Grainger on November 1994 and they’ve been together ever since.

Eldest son Nick Harper, played by actor Kris Marshall, was the cool, charismatic child who added an element of jest and slapstick comedy to the show as he portrayed an unemployed layabout almost too well.

After the show finished, Kris’s career continued to blossom.

The star played the leading role in popular murder mystery series Death in Paradise from 2013 to 2017.

Not only this but Kris also appeared in Christmas classic Love Actually.

Other credits include his appearance in BBC’s Citizen Khan.

Kris has two children who he shares with his wife Hannah Dodkins.

Actress Daniela Denby-Ashe, 42, played the role of the beloved Janey who was the second oldest child in the family.

During the show’s 11-year run, Daniela was not always seen as she took a two-year break between the years 2002 and 2004 as her role clashed with another project at the time.

But the star did make an unexpected return to the show and remained there until the end.

After the programme had finished, Daniela had a successful TV career and starred in shows such as Waterloo Road, Silent Witness and Midsomer Murders.

The star is fairly private about her life away from the cameras, however she is now mother to a beautiful daughter.

Gabriel Thomson as Michael Harper

Actor Gabriel Gabriel Thomson played youngest child Michael Harper and was often known for his intelligence and eagerness to be cool.

Once the sitcom came to an end the young star still continued acting in small theatre roles.

But in 2015, he had a change of heart with his career and decided to take a completely different route altogether.

Gabriel made the announcement to fans that he was retiring from acting to return to his true passion as a lawyer.

According to publication The Daily Mirror, Gabriel, 34, went on to attend King’s College in London to study philosophy to pursue his career as a human rights lawyer.
