It’s been 20 years since Elle Woods graced our screens as loveable blonde turned Harvard Law School student in the popular and beloved franchise.
Legally Blonde follows Elle Woods from ditsy, sorority socialite to first-year law student in an effort to win back her ex-boyfriend Warner.
The perky blonde surprises critics by winning a spot at Harvard Law School with her tiny Chihuahua Bruiser in tow. With a flair for pink, she discovers she is actually cut out for the courtroom.
The franchise was even turned into a Broadway musical! So, where are the stars now? Let’s take a look
Reese Witherspoon
Reese Witherspoon shined as the film’s protagonist, Elle Woods, a bubbly, Chihuahua-loving sorority sister-turned-law school student.
Since starring in the hugely popular Legally Blonde franchise as loveable bimbo Elle Woods, Reese has landed countless box office hits such as Sweet Home Alabama, Water for Elephants and Walk the Line, which saw the 45-year-old take home an Academy Award for Best Actress in 2005.
Witherspoon also owns a clothing company, Draper James, and she is actively involved in children’s and women’s advocacy organizations.
She serves on the board of the Children’s Defense Fund and co-founded production company Type A Films, which focuses on producing female-led stories
Luke Wilson
Luke Wilson starred as attorney Emmett Richmond and later Elle’s husband in the sequel, Red, White & Blonde. The brother of Owen Wilson, now 49, has also starred in The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), college comedy Old School (2003) and starred in cult classic Idiocracy in 2006.
Since 2020, Wilson stars in the DC Universe/The CW series Stargirl and has co-written a Wright Brothers biopic with his brother Owen, in which they also plan to star.
In 2018, Luke and golfer Bill Haas were involved in a fatal car crash that left one person dead and two people injured, after their car was hit by a Ferrari. The driver of the Ferrari was pronounced dead at the scene while two others were taken to a nearby hospital.
Luke has also dated a string of famous actresses including Drew Barrymore and Gwyneth Paltrow, and has spoken out about his wish to start a family.
“I’m ready for that. I need to get to work,” he told Hollywood life.
Commenting on the new Legally Blonde film, Luke speculated on what Elle and Emmett’s life together would be like 20 years on.
“I would say they definitely have a few children and I just think that it’d be really funny if Reese had a little mini-me, a version of herself,” he told Entertainment Tonight.
Selma Blair
Selma Blair played Vivienne Kensington, Elle’s rival-turned-friend. Selma Blair went on to act in movies like The Sweetest Thing, A Guy Thing, The Poker House, and Cruel Intentions. Her fandom grew when she played Liz Sherman in the 2004 superhero film “Hellboy” and its 2008 sequel.
She also appeared in Anger Management and famously fell out with Charlie Sheen after reportedly growing frustrated with his work ethic.
According to TMZ, she complained to show bosses that Sheen was unprofessional, frequently arriving late and not displaying a productive work ethic, leading to her abrupt exit from the series.
Selma also played Kris Jenner in “The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story.”
In 2018 Selma revealed that she’d been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, but recently announced that her condition had improved as a result of a stem cell transplant and chemotherapy.
The illness had put her through intense physical pain, leaving her unable to speak properly or fully use her left leg – she was also seen using a cane for the Oscars red carpet two years ago.
Selma married writer-producer Ahmet Zappa, though the couple divorced in 2006. From 2010 to 2012, she dated fashion designer Jason Bleick, with whom she shares son Arthur.
Matthew Davis
Matthew Davis played Warner Huntington III, Elle’s pretentious ex-boyfriend and Vivienne’s ex-fiancé.
Since landing his breakout role in Legally Blonde in 2001, Matthew is best known for his portrayal of Alaric Saltzman on the CW fantasy series The Vampire Diaries from 2009 to 2017.
The Blue Crush actor also starred on the short-lived ABC comedy series What About Brian and the CW horror-drama “Cult.” In 2018, he married actress Kiley Casciano. The couple welcomed their first child, a daughter, in 2020.
Jennifer Coolidge
Jennifer Coolidge played Elle’s shy manicurist and friend Paulette Bonafonté. Best known for her role in American Pie, Coolidge, who turns 60 this month, also appeared on the small screen, landing roles on television shows like The Secret Life of the American Teenager and 2 Broke Girls.
In 2020, she appeared in two films — Like a Boss and Promising Young Woman, which starred Carey Mulligan. She also made a cameo as her Legally Blonde character in Ariana Grande’s “thank u, next” music video in 2018.
She famously split from comedian Chris Kattan around the time Legally Blonde was released. Her charitable work has included a history of supporting AIDS assistance and animal rights and has a pet dog named Chuy that was rescued from a meat factory in Korea
Ali Larter
Ali Larter, 45, played Brooke Taylor Windham, a widow accused of her husband’s murder in the popular movie. The New Jersey native went on to appear on the cover of Maxim magazine and performed in the stage play The Vagina Monologues in New York City.
She later reprised her role as Clear Rivers in the sequel to her breakout movie, Final Destination. But Larter is perhaps most famous for starring in the “Resident Evil” franchise, a series of video-game-inspired movies that closed with “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter” in 2016.
.Larter married long-time partner, How I Met Your Mother actor Hayes MacArthur, in 2009 and went on to have two children – a son, Theodore and daughter, Vivienne. Larter and her family live happily in their $2.9million home in the Hollywood Hills.
In 2020, Leonard Roberts, a black actor who plays her on-screen husband in Heroes, accused her of mistreating him on set, and commented publicly that he “wondered if race was a factor”.
Ali issued a statement in response that said: “I am deeply saddened to hear about Leonard Roberts’ experience on Heroes and I am heartbroken reading his perception of our relationship, which absolutely doesn’t match my memory nor experience on the show.
“I respect Leonard as an artist and I applaud him or anyone using their voice and platform.
“I am truly sorry for any role I may have played in his painful experience during that time and I wish him and his family the very best.”
Linda Cardellini
Linda Cardellini played cool and condescending Chutney Windham, daughter of the wealthy murder victim in a case that Elle is working on in the movie.
Over the years, she’s appeared on numbers shows, like AMC’s Mad Men and Netflix’s Bloodline. She’s also acted in a few films, including Scooby-Doo (2002), Kill the Irishman (2011), and Green Book (2018).
In August 2019, Cardellini appeared alongside Christina Applegate in Netflix’s dark comedy series Dead to Me, where she received critical acclaim and a nomination for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.
Cardellini gave birth to her daughter in February 2012 with her partner Steven Rodriguez
