Anne Robinson admits she snubbed BBC's offer of The Weakest Link return

Anne Robinson has revealed she had the chance to return to The Weakest Link but said no – twice!

The TV star made a huge splash on the long-running BBC quiz show and amassed plenty of fans thanks to her rather acerbic wit, with her phrase “you are the weakest link, goodbye!” becoming well used.

But when it was resurrected last year comedian Romesh Ranganathan was the host.

And Anne has now shared that she was offered the opportunity to return twice but decided against it, because things are different today and she didn’t want to be a “cheesy game-show host”.

“Wokeness has taken the heart out of comedy,” the Mail quoted her as saying.

Anne hosted The Weakest Link for many years

“Times have really changed. I wouldn’t want to be a cheesy game-show host, and that is what the BBC wanted. Where’s the fun if you can’t ask, ‘What do you do when you’re not eating?’ or ‘Have you had that hair cut for a bet?'”

She went on: “No one saw anything wrong with it, but you couldn’t say it today.”

Anne, 77, fronted the game show from 2000 but in 2011 announced she was exiting.

The star did come back for a one-off Children In Need episode in 2017.

Anne has been hosting Countdown

The programme was revived last year with Romesh and he admitted at the time that it was a bit of a “double-edged sword”.

Talking to iNews, he said he would be doing it his own way.

“The way that Anne did it was brilliant and I don’t know that I could get away with that,” he said.

“I don’t think I’ve got that in me, to take it to that level.”

Anne has appeared on several other TV programmes over the years and has most recently been hosting Countdown.

However, last week she announced that she would be leaving the show.
