BBC Breakfast’s Sally Nugent slammed education secretary Nadhim Zahawi MP after he defended the Conservative party following Islamophobia allegations in parliament.
During Monday’s instalment of the popular news show, the 50-year-old broadcaster and her co-host Dan Walker welcomed viewers back as they updated audiences on the latest news headlines.
One of the biggest stories over the weekend was the allegations by former Tory MP Nusrat Ghani who claimed she was sacked for being Muslim.
As the government continue to look into the allegations, 54-year-old education secretary joined the show to give his views on what his experience has been like as an integral part of the political party.
But it appeared as though the newsreader wasn’t impressed by his lengthy answers as she grilled him on air for evading her questions.
After listening to his views on the controversial topic, she bluntly asked if he was “fed up” of defending his party to the public.
She said: “Mr Zahawi, I am just curious – you are education secretary and we’re at a time of great change in terms of children and whether they’re going to wear face masks in classrooms.
“I’m gonna talk to you about that in a second, but your job is to deal with that.
“I am just curious to know – you come on here to talk to the viewers at home who are watching us on BBC One this morning – are you a little bit fed up of constantly having to defend your party and your prime minister?”
As the party candidate attempted to answer her brutal question with an anecdote, the broadcaster interrupted his story as she argued he wasn’t answering her question.
She argued: “You’re not really answering my question though are you? Are you fed up?”
Despite her pushback he persevered with his story as he explained his thoughts behind Prime Minister’s response following the Garden Party scandal.
He continued: “Well, what I’m saying to you is if your viewers look at the big decisions to keep the economy open, the most open economy in Europe.
“To make sure that the protection for jobs is in place – £400 billion going into that – and on vaccine deployment then this government’s got it right.
“But he’s human and we all make mistakes and he made a mistake. He came and apologise to parliament – we’ve had the apology, now we need the actual detail which is why Sue Gray’s report is important.
“And we’ll get that and the prime minister will make a statement to parliament as he has said he will do.”
It was at this point that Sally spoke over the party member as she redirected the conversation onto the decision to remove the use of face masks in classrooms across the country.
Sally interjected with: “I’m going to move you on there Mr Zahawi if you don’t mind because I don’t think we’re going to get an answer are we about whether you’re fed up or not so we’ll just move on shall we?”
And even the viewers were frustrated with their answers from the politician as they took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the disappointing discussion.
One user penned: “You know the interview hasn’t gone well when Dan Walker gives a huge sigh of frustration and Sally Nugent just laughs at your responses #bbcbreakfast.”
Another added: “‘He’s human and we all make mistakes,’ says Nadhim Zahawi while avoiding answering Sally Nugent’s questions about whether he’s fed up of coming on & having to defend Boris Johnson #BBCBreakfast.”
A third chimed in with” Nadhim Zahawi waxing lyrical about Boris Johnson like f***ing Jackanory is sickening. Sally Nugent obviously feeling like the rest of us. When Johnson goes his a***-licking sycophants should all go too #BBCBreakfast.”
