BBC Breakfast's Dan Walker praises Carol Kirkwood as she celebrates huge career shift

BBC Breakfast’s Dan Walker was quick off the mark to congratulate his friend and colleague Carol Kirkwood after she shared pictures of her new novel on Twitter.

Dan, who leaves the show tomorrow (May 17), responded to her announcement saying: “Get in there,” adding an adoring love hearts face and raised hands emojis, plus a photo of the book, due out in July.

It’s another big step forward in the moonlighting life of popular weather presenter Carol who became a Sunday Times best-selling romantic fiction author a year ago.

When she’s not on-screen telling us when the next thunderstorm or heatwave is going to strike, skipping the light fandango on Strictly Come Dancing, or reporting from Wimbledon, Carol is scribbling her fictional fantasies, tapping into her passion of travel and glamour.

Latest book The Hotel on the Riviera is subtitled “it’s the perfect place to hide a secret”.

Pitched at holiday readers, publishers Harper Collins suggest that they “escape to the French Riviera this summer with TV’s national treasure”.

This second title comes just 12 months after Carol’s fiction debut.

Under a Greek Moon, hit the UK bestseller charts and was praised by fans for offering some welcome escapism during difficult times.

It’s no surprise that Dan is showing his support.

He also became a first time author last year with his “uplifting” non fiction title Remarkable People, telling the inspiring stories of courageous people he has met as a TV journalist.

There was speculation about the weather presenter’s future career less than a month ago Scottish-born Carol was rumoured to have a new job when she made a shock appearance on Morning Live.

And some fans even suggested she could soon be stepping into Dan’s shoes when he leaves BBC 1’s breakfast show to read the news on Channel 5, although a replacement has now apparently been confirmed.

But for the moment it looks like Carol, who started as a BBC secretary before auditioning for a presenting role, is staying put, finding enough time to put pen to paper alongside the day job.
