BBC Three returned to screens for the first time in five years after it was closed down as a channel – but some fans were left divided over its launch party.
The BBC channel previously moved online in 2016 – but has now returned to the nation’s TV screens.
It came after research in 2020 found there was a “strong case” for it to return to mainstream television – but aimed at a younger audience.
The big launch party came on Tuesday night (February 1), hosted by Radio One stars Greg James and Clara Amfo.
The party featured live performances from acts like Selecta, a new music video from George Ezra, and teaser clips of what’s to come on the channel – such as shows like RuPaul’s Drag Race: UK Versus The World.
However, although some fans were delighted to see the return of the BBC channel, others were left bitterly disappointed and took to Twitter to make their views public.
One gutted viewer wrote: “actually disappointed with this BBC Three launch party, really boring”
A second said: “That had to be the worst channel launch”
A third added: “Is this whole launch meant to feel like an unfunny W1A sketch is that what you were going for?”
A fourth clearly wasn’t a fan of the musical renditions as they fumed: “I was quite looking forward to BBC Three coming back but this music is making me want to eat my f***in eyeballs”.
However, others defended the relaunch as they were delighted to see the channel return.
One wrote: “Actually so far really liking the BBC Three relaunch. That news segment did feel a bit like newsround though”
A second said: “Loving the BBCThree launch!”
A third commented: “Really enjoying the return of BBCThree”.
A fourth penned: “welcome back #BBCThree”
The varied re-launch show also featured segments of interviews with the likes of Love Island star Zara McDermott and Hollywood star Tom Holland.
The channel will host shows like RuPaul’s Drag Race: UK Versus The World, and new shows like The Fast and the Farmer-ish.
Fiona Campbell, BBC Three’s controller, hailed the style of the new channel as: “unfiltered, unapologetic and extraordinary”.
She said: “Our channel is all about a concentrated experience of how tough it is to be super young in the UK today and that show epitomises and embodies that tough emotion and feeling.”
