Comedy legend Rhod Gilbert gives health update amid Stage 4 cancer diagnosis

Comedian Rhod Gilbert has offered fans an update on his health after confirming his Stage 4 cancer diagnosis earlier this year.

The stand-up legend said he is feeling “optimistic” about his condition after moving with his family to be closer to the hospital where he is receiving treatment.

He confirmed that his cancer is at Stage 4 after suffering a “terribly sore throat” and finding lumps all over his body.

Rhod said: “I had a terribly sore throat, tightness through my neck. I was having to cancel shows because I couldn’t breathe.

“I was having all sorts of problems and we couldn’t get to the bottom of it. In May, I noticed lumps started popping up in places they shouldn’t be.”

Rhod was out fundraising for the Velindre Cancer Hospital in Cardiff when his symptoms became worse on a trek through Cuba.

He said: “It turns out I’ve got Stage 4 cancer. I also caught Covid on that walk as well. I came home with cancer and Covid from a Velindre fundraising trek… the irony of that! I went as a Velindre patron and came home as a patient.”

Rhod has since been receiving chemotherapy and radiotherapy, as well as undergoing surgery – but confirmed to the BBC that he doesn’t know whether or not it has worked yet.

In a candid update, the DIY SOS star said: “I’m feeling happy, positive and optimistic. I’m feeling good and feel like I’m recovering day-by-day.

“Some days I’m well enough to do a bit of writing and I’ve got a feeling when I’ve got through all this there’ll be a show in it.”

Rhod has been a proud patron of the Velindre Centre for years, and hosted comedy nights in support of the NHS facility earlier this year, after revealing his own diagnosis.

Announcing the news of his health issues originally, he said: “As a proud patron of Velindre Cancer Centre, I’ve trekked the world, hosted chaotic quizzes and star-studded comedy nights.

“I’ve met and made friends with so many inspirational staff, patients and their families. It has been a huge part of my life for the last ten years.

“So while I never imagined that I would be a patient here, I know better than anyone that I am in the best possible hands. The NHS care I’m receiving is incredible.”

In August, Rhod’s wife Sian Harries confirmed the couple have moved closer to the hospital.

She tweeted: “Moved house for the third time today since July so Rhod can be close to hospital.

“Life is a lot at the moment but we’re getting through it with the help of our wonderful friends and family.”
