Coronation Street’s Kelly Neelan was left devastated as her mum Laura passed away in hospital – with only Maria Connor by her side.
And despite Laura’s terminal cancer diagnosis, fans are certain Maria could have had a hand in her death after spotting some key clues.
With Kelly absent at the hairdressing awards on Friday (April 8), Gary and Maria’s attempts to convince her to see her mum one last time failed, until Kelly changed her mind – and it was too late.
As she turned up at the hospital, it was to see Maria in tears, exclaiming: “I’m so sorry, Kelly. I’m so sorry.”
Kelly collapsed in tears before going in to see her mum’s body.
Fans were quick to point out, however, that Maria could have given Laura a hand in dying at the last minute before she could tell Kelly the truth about what Gary did to her dad Rick.
Maria has been determined to keep Gary’s secret since he came clean to Laura, allowing him to avoid prison and prevent Kelly from losing her two new guardians. But Laura taking the blame left Kelly devastated.
And with Maria’s repeated apology, some fans think she might have more to say sorry for than simply Kelly’s loss.
One penned on Twitter: “Pretty sure Maria helped Laura on her way! #Corrie.”
As another echoed: “It makes sense that Maria could have quickened Laura’s death, esp if she didn’t want Kelly knowing about Rick?? #Corrie”.
“Laura’s death kinda makes life easier for Gary & Maria now at least. No risk of her suddenly withdrawing her confession anytime soon (Well ever) it’s already been 3 years,” someone else pointed out.
Other fans are wondering why Gary and Maria didn’t drive Kelly straight to the hospice instead of the hairdressing awards – could it simply be another ploy to get her to miss her mum’s last breath, and potential confession?
One guessed before the episode aired: “I think Gary and Maria are going to drive Kelly to the hospice under the pretence that they’re going to the awards ceremony.”
But that didn’t end up happening.
Actress Kel Allen has paid an emotional tribute to her character Laura, admitting she was “overwhelmed” by the “emotional storyline and saying goodbye to the soap.
She wrote on Twitter: “Thank you so much for all of the love & beautiful comments about tonight’s ep of @itvcorrie.
“I’m overwhelmed, it’s been emotional. Someone please give my baby girl @MillieGibson01an award & invite me to it so I can cheer her on.
“Terrah cockers, from me & our Laura #corrie”.
The star added: “Well I’m an absolute emotional, crying, sobbing mess & how could I not be, with that heart wrenching performance from my absolute powerhouse of a daughter.”
Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8pm on ITV.
