EastEnders gives insight into 'timid' young Phil Mitchell in '70s flashback

EastEnders is set for an exciting episode next week where viewers will be transported back to the 70s and see their favourite characters in their youth.

In the episode Phil is shocked to his core to discover who Keeble wants him to inform on – leading viewers to be transported to 1979 to learn more about the Mitchell family’s chequered past in the area.

Young Actor Daniel Delany has taken on the iconic role of Phil Mitchell, who at this time is only 19 years old.

Daniel has explained how young Phil is very different to the menacing Phil Mitchell we see on TV today.

Daniel said: “He is more timid for sure. The audience will get to see and know the dynamic in the Mitchell household when Eric – Phil’s dad – was around.

“He was seen as man of the house and Phil was seen as the understudy as it were but it’s going to be fun, it’s going to be a very different Phil.

“I’m looking forward to getting people’s reaction and I also think it’s important that the Mitchell family’s story gets told.”

This episode, airing September 5, will feature Jaime Winstone as a young Peggy Mitchell, after previously playing Dame Barbara Windsor in the TV biopic Babs .

The office EastEnders Instagram page posted a picture to Instagram of the cast and wrote in the caption: “The #EastEnders flashback episode, centred around the Mitchell family, is set to air on BBC One and @bbciplayer at 7:30 on Monday 5th September.

“Viewers will be transported to the winter of 1979 as the Mitchells are hit hard by a Britain in economic turmoil. Peggy has her hands full between keeping the boys, Sam and the household in line whilst her marriage to Eric is showing its cracks.”

They explained that tension arises between Phil and Eric while Archie is up to his old tricks, meanwhile Ronnie and Roxy are trying to stay out of trouble.

They added: “As present day Phil grapples with growing pressure from DCI Keeble, audiences will take a journey back to his youth where clues to his present will undoubtedly be revealed… How will revelations about the past influence Phil’s ability to protect his family in 2022?

“Will the truth of DCI Keeble’s vendetta against the Mitchell family finally be revealed?”
