King Charles III seemed to fight back tears as he paid an emotional tribute to his “darling Mama” in his first speech as King.
His Majesty addressed the nation for the first time as our monarch on Friday (September 9) in a pre-recorded message which was broadcast at 6pm.
It comes one day after Queen Elizabeth II, his late mother, passed away “peacefully” at Balmoral on Thursday, surrounded by her family.

His Majesty finished his speech with a heartfelt message addressed directly to his late mother and father, The Duke of Edinburgh.
In the speech, he thanked her for her “love and devotion” to the royal family, and for her many years of service.
He said:” To my darling Mama, as you begin your last great journey to join my dear late Papa, I want simply to say this. Thank you.
“Thank you for your love and devotion to our family, and to the family of nations you have served so diligently all these years.”
He concluded: “May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.”
The King opened his speech by praising the Queen as a mother, telling the nation: “My beloved mother was an inspiration, an example, to me and to all my family, and we owe her the most heartfelt debt any family could owe to their mother. For her love, affection, guidance, understanding and example.”
He proceeded to acknowledge that his mother will be “mourned most deeply” before pledging that he’ll continue her legacy of duty.
The King added: “That promise of life-long service I renew to you all today.”
Later in his speech, he explained how his son, Prince William, has succeeded him as the Duke of Cornwall and will take on the duties he had taken on for “more than five decades.”
He also expressed his love for Harry and Meghan as they “continue to build their new lives overseas.”
