Prince Philip once took hilarious swipe at David and Victoria Beckham's wedding

It wasn’t unusual for Prince Philip to make a savage joke from time to time.

The late Duke of Edinburgh was known for his quick wit and on occasions controversial sense of humour, which landed him in hot water more than once.

He even once had a pop at David and Victoria Beckham’s wedding thrones during the Queen’s last Jubilee in 2012.

During the celebrations 10 years ago, The Queen and her husband took part in a River Pageant.

Although there were thrones set out for the Royals, they didn’t sit in them.

Noticing they weren’t sitting on the thrones, someone then asked Philip the reason why.

To which he quipped back: “We’d have looked like Mr and Mrs Beckham, wouldn’t we?”

The Duke was making a reference to David and Victoria’s wedding in 1999 where they sat on huge red velvet thrones.

When Prince Philip passed away in 2021, the retired football star and his 90s girl band wife paid tribute to him along with thousands on social media.

David took to his Instagram page to write a heartfelt message about his passing.

He wrote: “My thoughts and sympathies go to Her Majesty The Queen and the Royal Family as we join them to mourn the loss of Prince Philip.

“A public figure to the world but first a loving husband, father and grandfather. Today is a day to remember his life and incredible service to Britain and around the world. Rest in peace Your Highness.”

In her own post, Victoria said she was “saddened” to hear the news of his death before saying her heart went out to the Royal family.

A good friend to the Prince, Gyles Brandreth, once spoke about the Duke as he said his late friend was “easy-going, unaffected and good-humoured” with members of the public and royal staff.

Retelling a memory he once shared with Prince Philip, Gyles gave people a further glimpse into his personality.

He said: “Once, coming down the back stairs with him after some lunchtime function at a club in central London, we passed the kitchen.

“The Duke stopped, turned back and marched in, unannounced, to meet the chefs and dish-washers.

“There was laughter, back-slapping, joshing: an enviable display of people skills and unselfconscious charm. The only time I’ve seen it quite as well done was recently — by Prince William.”
