Status Quo rocker Rick Parfitt lit up a spliff on a children’s TV show.
The late guitarist was caught smoking pot on ITV series Tiswas, its host Chris Tarrant has revealed.
Rick and bandmate Francis Rossi were among a host of showbiz stars packed into a “celebrity cage”.
Chris, 75, said: “All of a sudden, the unmistakable smell of marijuana came wafting into my nostrils from the direction of the cage.
“Here’s me, the producer of a supposed children’s television programme, kids everywhere, parents everywhere, journalists everywhere, and one of my guests is smoking a joint.
“I abandoned the sketch, much to Lenny Henry’s bewilderment, and rushed to the cage, completely drenching everyone in it with bucket after bucket of the Midland Water Board’s finest product. The offending aroma disappeared, the spliff was no more.
“I have never, ever revealed who was the offending miscreant who smoked pot on a children’s television programme, and I would never do that…
“Oh, OK then, it was Rick Parfitt, but it doesn’t make him a bad person.”
In his book It’s Not A Proper Job, Chris admits he regretted the cage stunt, calling it a “moment of madness”.
He added: “It seemed like a good idea at the time.
“We had loads of mates from the music industry who were dying to come in the cage.
“It was a memorable morning. They got an extra special celebrity soaking, of course, but the atmosphere was great.”
