This Is England Cynthia star Jo Hartley unrecognisable 16 years later in glam snaps

Jo Hartley looks worlds away from her This Is England character 16 years after she played the role of Cynthia Fields.

The 50-year-old actress famously appeared in the 2006 film, which tells the story of young skinheads in England in 1983.

Fans will remember Cynthia as the mum of protagonist Shaun Fields (Thomas Turgoose.).

She also appeared in the three spin-off Channel 4 series – This is England ’86, This Is England ’88 and This Is England ’90.

Cynthia was known for sporting glasses, a bouffant hairstyle and often wearing a blue denim jean with matching trousers.

Nowadays, Jo sports more glamorous figure and often wows her 27,200 followers on Instagram with her social media snaps.

In one snap posted last month, Jo logged into the photo-sharing platform to show off her new hair do after visiting the salon before her trip to American.

She posed up a storm for the camera, wearing her brunette locks down in loose waves and enhanced her natural beauty with some make-up, including red lipstick.

Unsurprisingly, fans rushed to their keyboards to leave a complimentary message for Jo in the comment section.

Taking to Twitter, one fan penned: “Gorgeous.”

Another added: “Stunning, as always. A truly great actor.”

A third person posted: “Fab @ 50. You look lovely.”

While a fourth social media said: “Stunning.”

Jo’s character Cynthia came from a northern, working class background and her mother died when she was 14 years old, leaving her to look after her father and brother.

She met her son Shaun’s father at school and then got married aged 18.

Cynthia got pregnant and later welcomed Shaun, her only child.

At the start of the film, Cynthia is shown to be a loving mother to Shaun as he joins the new group.

She is displeased at his shaven head but happy that the gang purchase him new clothes.

During the television series, she persuades Shaun to apply for a job the day he finishes his exams and she begins a sexual relationship with Mr Sandhu (Kriss Dosanjh), much to her son’s horror.

In 1988, Cynthia and Mr Sandhu have been together a while, and look out for Shaun when he is distraught about cheating on Smell.

Jo has since appeared in Eddie The Eagle, Torvill & Dean and After Life.

The TV starlet recently said she was “blown away” by the “kind comments” about the third and final series of After Life.

Taking to social media the day after the Netflix series was released, Jo wrote: “I am blown away by all the kind comments about After Life 3.”

In a separate post she later added: “Mental After Life 3 has been out just over 24 hours and is already at number one on Netflix.”
