BBC Breakfast turns tense as Sally Nugent shuts down co-host in birthing row

BBC Breakfast turned rather tense this week as Sally Nugent shut down her co-host Jon Kay in a row about giving birth.

Jon and Sally were busy trawling through the newspapers on Tuesday (January 10) to find the best stories when Jon came across one about a mother giving birth in her local pub.

Things didn’t go quite so smoothly, however, when Sally repeatedly told Jon ‘no’ – and things turned awkward.

“This is the Wagoner’s Arms pub,” Jon explained to viewers, as Sally chimed in: “That sounds like a proper pub!”

The hosts awkwardly clashed in a row about giving birth

Jon went on to explain: “The landlady, Bobbi Long, was pregnant. She wanted to have a water birth at home, so she got one of these water pool things, but the floor and ceilings upstairs weren’t strong enough.

“So she had to put it downstairs in the pub itself! She went into labour and had to tell all the regulars, ‘Sorry guys, you’ve got to leave, labour has begun’.”

Sally couldn’t believe what she was hearing as she responded: “No! So she had the baby in the pub?”

“She had the baby in the pub,” Jon confirmed. “The regulars went having a whip-round to give her a present, and they had a baby… I don’t know whether it says! I think it’s a girl.”

He then confirmed: “Robin, born at 12.30am on Tuesday.”

Sally chimed in: “Did you say the landlady is called Bobbi? Congratulations Bobbi, well done – I tell you what, I salute you! A birthing pool in the pub, that takes some doing.”

But a different aspect entirely impressed Jon, as he quipped: “I think trying to get the regulars out of the pub any time, for any reason – ‘I’m having a pint!'”

Sally was quick to put an end to that trail of thought as she snapped: “Do you not think they all ran in the other direction? No, I don’t think so Jon! I don’t think so.”

He went on to mimic: “I’ve paid for this!”
